What is the typical file size/ unit time size for one of these?

I will be storing these files on an external hard drive and am wondering how big it should be. I am not talking about standard 480 resolution but 720p or 1080i seeing as how I am buying an HD Satellite receiver.

well, it really varies, but a 720p 120-minute movie runs ROUGHLY 37.5mb/minute, so about 4.5gb

1080p is about 3.5 GB / hr

1080i is about 1.75 GB / hr

720p is about 1.6 GB / hr

This is based on the files I currently have on my computer.

no, its a lot bigger than that. straight DVD rips are 3-5gigs for a 2 hour movie. i've been doing that the past two days.

damn, i need to convert some of my raw hd footage to something else, one hour is like 15 gigs from my camcorder

^^mpeg4s have compression, they should be smaller than straight dvd rips which are mpeg2s



and honestly it depends on what codec you use

there's no reason it should be that large for a compressed 480p movie
