They will fit the AM2 board (I recently bought a Gigabyte board that advertised it). However, when you put the AM2+ (Phenom) chip in the AM2 socket, you get the full chip speed and core abilities, but the bus speed is reduced to 1 Ghz (1/2-1/3 of what it is supposed to be)

This is my understanding from the manual of the Gigabyte board, the thing is, they exclusively said 'supports AM2/AM2+' So there is also the BIOS firmware issues in other brands.

Personally, I'd get a cheap AM2 chip now and wait for prices to drop if money is a concern.
