I've got a new clutch and flywheel on my 89 wrangler (4.2L engine). I was getting a bad grind/crunch when trying to start. When I took the starter off I could see some spots on the flywheel where the gears on the bendix were hitting. I took the starter back to Advance. The guy who tested it said the bendix was slow to engage and was hanging up a little. They warrantied it and I just installed the new one. I'm getting a similar sound but not quite as bad. Is this normal with a new flywheel? 6/30/2008 8:22:54 PM |

sure it's the right size flywheel?
did you compare to old one before putting back on?
what problems were you having to need replacement of flywheel to begin with? 6/30/2008 8:40:02 PM |

I did a quick visual comparison of the flywheels but I didn't make sure they were the exact same. My clutch went out. Right about that same time I started getting a bad grind when starting the Jeep and when I braked really hard. Something in the whole deal down there was loose. When we pulled the engine and tranny apart the flywheel was pretty scarred up so I went ahead and changed while it was all apart. We put everything back together good and tight and it seemed fine for the first couple of starts. If it needs to be shimmed how would I find out? It never has been since I've had it (6 or 7 years). 6/30/2008 9:44:36 PM |

The inspection plate is the thin piece of sheet metal right? I put that back on. 7/1/2008 6:45:04 AM |
