I get an error when I try to turn off file vault.
It goes through the entire encryption process and at the end it gives an error saying that there was an error during copying, and the image will remain encrypted (or something to that effect).
Any suggestions as to what could be the cause of this? Any workarounds? 7/3/2008 2:01:50 AM |

take a look in system.log when you do it
it would help if you told us what it said 7/3/2008 10:47:37 AM |

Do you have enough free space on your disk to decrypt everything? To turn file vault off, the OS essentially has to make a copy of your home folder and then delete the encrypted image, so you should have at the absolute bare minimum enough free space to make a copy of your home folder and a little bit for swap space, and preferably more than that. 7/3/2008 8:18:38 PM |

The apple tech training on file-vault problem debugging was amusing. It recommended that employees advise against using file vault if the user had any questions about it- the idea being that if they are uncertain about using it then the possible annoyances weren't worth it. Apparently file vault use ends in problems pretty often and most people who play around with it don't really need to. 7/8/2008 12:33:01 AM |
