customer at our shop has this car, and they're torn between repairing or selling.... i'm interested but would like some further opinions on what to offer-

99 Subaru Legacy Outback wagon.... 166k 5 speed manual

blue book is in the 4500-6000 range assuming good condition

this one has a salvage title (not sure of the history behind it) collision damage i think, but seems to be well repaired. body is in good condition, drives well, overall about an 8/10

has blown head gasket

i really dont need the car, but i could fix it easily enough and just beat the shit out of it, not looking at it as a fix-n-flip investment due to the salvage title

I'm thinking of offering $1000... thoughts and opinions?

I'd say assume it's worth half the bb value.. so 2500 tops.. you get it for $1000, and spend what..$500 fixing it? $1500 in it isn't bad.

but i mean, if you don't need it/don't really want it and aren't going to make any money on it (i.e. if you keep it for a while and the value drops too much)..what's the point?

that's the thing, i'm not too sure there is a point.... just want an all-wheel drive toy to thrash around it... plus you can cram a lot of junk in those things. If i get it i plan on keeping it until its pretty well destroyed, then junk it out. might do a junkyard turbo setup or something

as for your figures, that's right in line with what i was thinking. the estimate we've gave them to do everything they wanted done is close to $2000.... that includes both head gaskets, getting the heads surfaced, new clutch, flywheel surfaced, timing belt, water pump, accessory belts, radiator/heater hoses, full ignition tune-up. (they have a real bad case of the "might as wells")

of course if i get it.... i'd cut out most of that crap
