We are severally limited by the internet content here at work. No gmail, no youtube, etc. Although I don't really care about most stuff I would like to be able to listen to the WKNC stream while at work (I'm physically distant from Raleigh so radio isn't an option). I can access the wknc.org website, however, when I got load up the m3u file, I get a page cannot be displayed error. Using a webbased proxy doesn't seem to work (with anything). We are not discouraged to listen to other internet radio stations. I can open up WMP and connect to several stations this way. I suspect they basically blocked the traffic on port 8000 which WKNC seems to use. Is there a way to route the stream to to another port that is not blocked (such as 80)?

yes, there is a way

you'd have to tunnel traffic over a SSH connection however

I use an SSH tunnel at work, and highly recommend it for bypassing firewalls. If your firewall is overly aggressive, you may need to set SSH to run on a more commonly allowed port, like 80 or 21(My work blocks outbound SSH). Once it's running, use a program like PuTTY or Bitvise Tunnelier to run a SOCKS proxy over it.

With that done, you can then -
1) Use sockscap and configure it to use the SOCKS server that putty or tunnelier is running
or
2) Use CCproxy, point it at the SOCKS server, then tell the audio player to use it as a proxy
or
3) Best, if the player supports SOCKS, point it right at the SOCKS server

Tunnelier is my choice program because it has once-click options for opening a shell, SFTP, or RDP with the end host and super-easy port forwarding setup.

*OR*

Probably more simple, but not quite as useful for other things, is to install TVersity media server, and configure it to respond to external requests. It is great for streaming music from home because you can set it up to run on port 80, then browse to its included flash player interface. It supports pretty much any format you can think of, including serving web audio streams. You can probably just add the WKNC stream to TVersity's library, then just use the flash player at work to listen.

It sound kinda complicated, but it's actually much simpler than the SSH tunnel method. PM me if you want help setting it up - I've used both TVersity and SSH to get content streamed/proxied from home to work.

If listening to the radio is 'avoiding work', I'd hate to ever work with or for you.
