we pay for the turbo 10mbps/512kbps package

signal (as reported by the modem):

downstream snr: 37dB
downstream power: 3dBmV
(this is at qam 256)

upstream power: 34dBmV

these are almost perfect... my tivo (on the same line using a digital splitter) reports the same, if not better, signal (via cablecards).

even the twc tech that came out here to install my cablecards said my signal couldn't get much more perfect.

yet i've never seen our speed go above 6mbps down and 380kbps up. i know it's "best effort"... but come on. this is even at super-non-peak times (like 5am).

what's the deal?

timewarner tried some bullshit on me earlier

called me offering a speed upgrade and a decrease in our bill. the speeds they quoted as being an "upgrade" were actually slower. luckily i still had a copy of our contract from like 2 years ago. called them out on it. they upgraded us to a faster service and kept bill the same.

bastards

[Edited on July 11, 2008 at 10:42 AM. Reason : and your downloads are f'in faster than mine at work.. they need to give me a bigger budget]

[Edited on July 11, 2008 at 10:42 AM. Reason : actuall my uploads were 5x faster but dl's suck]

i didn't know ncren had a speed test server

that's awesome

i wonder what insane speeds you'd get on campus since ncsu's pipe is thru ncren

it's an in and out server. i usually try it and if the results are suspicious i check with DC and the Jacksonville, FL isn't a bad one either

surprisingly we usually get good results with Turbo, ~9.8Mbps D, ~480kbps U... outta 10Mbps that ain't bad

^ gave me some not so good results (twc has had a lot of problems the past couple of days with the storms) it may be better to stick with external sources like speedtest.net

yeah downloading entire divx movies in like 10 mins was pretty f'in sweet. i'd just get like 20 of them going before i went to bed and have them all when i woke up

of course none of them were porn, promise.

From Jordan Hall via http://ndt1.ncren.net:7123/:
running 10s outbound test (client-to-server [C2S]) . . . . . 38.54Mb/s
running 10s inbound test (server-to-client [S2C]) . . . . . . 93.98Mb/s

From an office on campus:

running 10s outbound test (client-to-server [C2S]) . . . . . 41.10Mb/s
running 10s inbound test (server-to-client [S2C]) . . . . . . 94.78Mb/s
Round trip time = 5.45 msec
The slowest link in the end-to-end path is a 100Mbps Full duplex Fast Ethernet subnet
