Hi,
I saw an ad for a 99 VW New Jetta from a dealer. The test-drive was pretty good but want to know of any place that might offer a pre-purchase inspection service at a reasonable price. Please PM me in case of any information.

Advice: Call some local mechanics and ask them what their price would be for a pre-purchase inspection. Make sure these mechanics have familiarity with VW's. 7/15/2008 10:10:55 PM |

BTW it was $75 for me to get one done at a dealership for my Jeep, if you're wondering if you're getting screwed.

I got the car inspected by West German Garage and this was the result:
Needed:
Oil Service Cooling System Flush & Service Brake Fluid Flush Air Filter Transmission service and flush Spark Plugs & Tune up Small Oil Pan Gasket leak Engine Oil Leak Fuel Filter
I didn't receive an estimate of how much these would cost - could someone give me an idea? And are these regular maintenance items or should I be concerned about any of these?

With all the fluid swaps and basic tune-up type stuff listed it almost seems like they just wanted some $$$. Did you notice if the car was actually dripping oil all over the place?
Whatever, every single thing listed on there is basic maintenance except for the oil leaks.
Also, I'm not certain, but aren't those transmissions on those jettas a sealed package? My dad has a 1999 VW Jetta (not the new body style, it's a 1999.0) and supposedly the transmission can't really have its fluid changed (I never checked to see if it was bull or not because it's not my money hole).
[Edited on July 19, 2008 at 11:10 AM. Reason : Usually every single fluid doesn't need to be done on a car at once.] 7/19/2008 11:09:57 AM |

yea thats a pretty generic list of stuff that "needs to be done"
also, stay away from west german garage 7/19/2008 4:23:12 PM |

Yeah, perhaps you should try again. There was a thread about german car mechanics.

It would be more $, again, but that list that the west german auto garage gave you is bullshit, with the exception of maybe the oil leaks. Also, is this an automatic or a manual transmission jetta? Just curious.

sounds like most of that stuff would fall under a 40k inspection (replaces all fluids, filters, etc). That runs about 450-500 at the VW dealership on Wake Forest Rd 7/19/2008 11:40:08 PM |
