This is funny, because I just finished setting up a linksys router for my supervisor. I've never really liked them that much, but that's mostly based on the fact that I've had to fix them for so many friends. I use a Dlink myself, and I've had no trouble at all.

I've had multiple linksys routers over the years, which i only changed to upgrade to get newer features.

The standard Vxworks interface is crap though.

DD-WRT or tomato ftw.


(no company homering here, linksys might as well be a different company based on how hands off we are)

I'd say that home networking equipment is a lot like cell phone providers. You'll have an equal number of people bitching and singing praises about a given brand.

I've got a 54g v8 running ddwrt and v2ish that I've never had problems with and just set up a 54gl at work that flashing and set up went just fine. I've heard that versions 4&5 were pretty crappy though.

^^^ it happened quite a while ago, but the short of it is that CSIRO (an australian organization) claims the rights to the development of modern wifi...buffalo is also an australian company, so they were targeted first in lawsuits regarding the sale of wireless products without paying proper royalties

I had about 10 or so linksys routers. My experience was about 5 were solid and never gave any trouble and the other 5 were chronically problematic. Firmware updates didn't solve the issues for those 5 and 2 of them actually bricked because the connection flaked out during the update.

I've been conditioned to think that for any linksys you pick up off the shelf you have a 50% chance of it being awesome and a 50% chance of it being a dud.

I guess I had a shitty Linksys-g, range didn't go to all parts of the house. Picked up a Belkin-g router once when they had it for like 9.99 after rebate at Circuit City, worked great for the last few years.

I just upgraded it to a Wireless-N Belkin, and so far its running great, amazing range, didn't have to update the firmware or anything...
