Does anyone know anything about this?

It seems to be a cheaper method than paying the 200+ for the dish on your house for Directwave or wildblue.
My parents live in the middle of no where and verizon hasn't run the cable another 5 miles yet. 7/24/2008 12:17:44 AM |

is your parents near a highway, is there a cell tower near by. Do you get good signal? Then it may work a bit better than dialup, but don't expect too much. Honestly, it's pretty good if you are in a metropolitan area, like DSL speed, almost 3mbps download and 600kbps upload. Again, YMMV. 7/24/2008 12:26:34 AM |

we're out in the boonies and went that route. $59.95/month and it's a hell of a lot better than dialup and there's no way we were paying like $79+ to have it through satellite. It isn't road runner but it's a definitely something that can hold you over. I can stream video and download without a problem. Upload rates are shit. Speedtest.net gives me 800kbps-1Mbps down and maybe 120kbps up. Hell I've even played online with xbox live and it's a little laggy but workable. And it's nice to be able to take it pretty much anywhere you go.

my parents used a razr tethered to their computer
for $35/month ($25 for the service, no contract, and $10 for the extra line), they get about 200kbps down and 100kbps up
it's not great, but it's a lot better than dial-up, and they got rid of their landline (so when you consider the $10 they were spending on dial-up access and the $30 that was their minimum landline bill, they're coming slightly ahead, since they don't use the landline anyway) 7/24/2008 10:27:04 AM |

that's what we did. We had a regular line and just a line for dialup + we were paying like $20 for aol(). Did away with those since we only use cellphones anyway and everyone we know either has Alltel or we've added to our My Circle. We got the card that plugs into a usb port and it was free after rebate but I believe it's a 2 yr contract. http://tinyurl.com/6n3ap7 And they're supposed to be improving speeds in September but it's perfectly fine now if you're not downloading porn 24/7. 7/24/2008 11:49:37 AM |
