My car windows were down and after running my Ford Explorer into a ditch and getting pulled out by a friend the driver side window would not go back up. I tested the switch, the wiring, everything seemed fine. The motor was pulling over 15 amps so I know the motor was engaged. The window was moving freely and I tried pulling up on manually to no avail.

Not wanting to take the motor out unless I absolutely had to, I brought my roomates laboratory power supply outside to give the motor more power and it still did not budge. That is, until I pumped it up to 18 volts: sparks flew, the meter pegged above 30 amps (it was a 60 amp power supply), and the window jerked upwards. Wire it back up to the car and my window works perfectly now!

If anyone else has this problem in the future, now we know how to fix it!

sounds like the commutator had too much brush residue in the terminals, you probably just burnt it out of there, when you could have taken it apart and fixed it right in less than 15 min

That sounds about right, but I don't know how I would have fixed that "right".
