didnt see a thread for this yet, and I wanted to post somewhere that the NFL (pre)season starts this Sunday night at the annual Hall of Fame game.
Its gonna be the Colts vs. the Redskins at 8:00pm on NBC
and I know that the "preseason sucks" and all that shit, but I am pretty damn excited to see some NFL action in primetime again - and I'm sure I'm not the only one 7/31/2008 8:06:00 PM |

Will all the nonsense, scandal, and controversy that gets so much press in the NFL today, I thought I'd share an article I came across that's positive. It's nice to hear about the "good guys" every now and again.

Quote : | "Bucs Coach Shows What It's All About
A week later, Brett Favre doesn’t really seem to matter much anymore. Not when you hear what Jon Gruden is like when the cameras and recorders are off.
On the night the Favre fiasco all went down last week and everybody in the media waited to grill the Tampa Bay Bucs coach about what went wrong, Gruden obviously had more important things on his mind.
Like grabbing Scotty Parkins in a bear hug and in that gravelly, hoarse, tough-guy voice of his, telling him over and over again until he understood: "I love you, man. I love you."
And then squeezing Scotty some more and saying, "I’m proud of you. I’m so proud of you."
Scott Parkins, Scotty’s father, called the other day to relay the story about his son’s training camp experience with Gruden and to say, "I just want to tell you something and you can do with it what you want, but there’s another side of Jon Gruden that somebody needs to know about. I can’t tell you how much it means to our family that Coach Gruden took the time to make our son feel so special."
Gruden always did like tough guys, and they don’t get any tougher than Scotty Parkins. He may be only 6 years old, but he’s more of an iron man than Brett Favre will ever be.
You want to talk about playing with pain; nobody has done it with more courage than the little kid from Winter Park wearing the red Bucs shirt. Nobody in today’s NFL has taken as many blindside hits or been sacked more times than Scotty Parkins. And every time, he absolutely refuses to stay down.
"I played my share of football and had my share of injuries," says his father, a former Clemson linebacker, "but I can’t begin to imagine what he contends with."
Scotty was born with Down syndrome and the challenges that come with it, but nearly four years ago his parents - Scott and Kathy - discovered he also had leukemia. For the past 38 months, he’s undergone intensive chemotherapy that has managed to control disease and put it in remission.
But when you inject chemical poison into your bloodstream, it doesn’t just kill the cancer; it ravages most everything else, too. You name it, Scotty has endured it.
He’s puked his guts out and watched his hair fall out. He has hearing problems. Blood problems. Speech and spinal problems. He’s had fungal infections and viral infections. Since the day Kathy gave birth to her 4-pound prematurely born son, it seems he’s had a tube stuck somewhere in his tired, aching little body.
But guess what? You wouldn’t know it by visiting him at home. You should see his face light up when you mention his favorite person in the world - his 11-year-old cousin Emory. You should see him dance when his favorite musical group - The Wiggles - comes on the Disney Channel. And he loves to play with his two favorite toys, Herman and Grandpa dolls, from his favorite TV show - reruns of The Munsters.
And, oh yeah, he loves to watch football - or, as he calls it, "Ah-Ball" - with his mom and dad. In fact, maybe the two words he speaks the clearest are these:
"Go Bucs!" he screams.
It’s no wonder Gruden and the rest of the Bucs took so quickly to him last Thursday night amid the Favre firestorm. And if not for a dad who was so touched by the moment that he picked up a phone and called the newspaper, we would have missed it.
Isn’t it a shame? Sometimes, we get so caught up in the controversy and chaos of sports that we forget what they’re really all about: Bringing joy to those who play them and watch them.
Gruden could have easily given Scotty an obligatory pat on the head, took the requisite picture and been on his way Thursday night at the Disney training camp. But he spent 15 or 20 minutes with him. Talking to him. Really talking to him. Putting a hand on his cheek, looking him in the eye and talking to him like few people ever talk to a kid with Down syndrome.
"Some people walk right by kids and don’t say hello," Gruden told the Sentinel’s Chris Harry Tuesday at Bucs training camp. "Take an interest in young people no matter what their status might be. Some might not be as fortunate as others. Some might not be as physically able as others. Some might have health problems or other kinds of problems. Do anything you can do to uplift them and motivate them, and even spend time with them - sometimes that’s worth more than anything you can give."
It’s so seldom we hear the true song of sports anymore that we barely remember what it sounds like.
And if you’ve forgotten, you should have been at the Parkins house Saturday night when the Bucs were playing the Dolphins. As Tampa Bay took the field and Gruden’s picture flashed across the TV screen, Scotty dropped Herman Munster, jumped up and down and yelled out, "Coach! . . . Coach!"
Football may build character.
But Ah-ball reveals it." |
