So in the oddest situation ever,

I HAVE to go to a ballet, it is a dead-end situation,

So what do people wear to a formal ballet?

A suit with tie? It is at night, but the weather will still be burning hot....

it's usually suit and tie, unless it's like a rehearsal or something silly.

depends, is it a professional production? or is it interpretive dance ballet, like the 'dance' students like to put on.

don't you own a light weight wool summer suit?

it's not that bad, unless you are exercising outside.

if you are in the working world, at min. you should have 2-4 suits ranging from dark to light heavy weight and same for light weight wool.

When I Was younger I was forced to go to the Russian Ballet and was required to wear a suit. Then again this was overseas, where I also have to wear a suit when I go see plays etc...which I was surprised to find out that on broadway one does not get dressed up to go see a play.
