So this is definitely a stupid question which I haven't be able to figure out on my own, calling the support line, or googling, so I'm asking here.
I just got a new computer with vista enterprise. I can easily connect to the internet with an ethernet capble, but I can't connect to my wireless linksys adapter (this computer has a built in wireless card). It says connected when I try (or connected with limited access depending on where I'm looking), but it wont load any webpages. What am I doing wrong?

Can other computers connect reliably to the wireless router? How is the router connected to the internet? If it's a cable modem, have you reset the cable modem after connecting it to the router? Can you connect by wire through the router, or just directly to whatever broadband you have? 8/4/2008 1:38:49 AM |

Other computers could connect no problem. yeah its a cable modem. and i could connect my new computer to the internet using the ethernet cord. i did hold the reset button for 30 secs and now no computer can connect to the network, not even with the ethernet cord. 8/4/2008 2:05:34 PM |

what lights are on/off on the modem? on a lot of them there's a button that is basically a stand by button.. it's on top of this one.. make sure you've played with that. 8/4/2008 2:16:45 PM |

if you connect the modem directly to your laptop, reset everything and it still doesn't work then it's most likely a problem with whoever your internet provider is. i'd recommend calling a friend that has a clue, they can probably diagnosis it in about 5 minutes 8/4/2008 2:56:21 PM |

it still confuses me as to how the wireless internet worked with 2 laptops but not a 3rd all at the same time. 8/4/2008 3:03:12 PM |

If the "send" light is not lit up then your connection is bad. It should be a solid green light- only the orange activity light should flicker. My connection this past couple days has been flaking out a lot. I thought it was from some of the storms at first, but it turns out the asshats that installed our neighbors cable took ours off the direct connection it was on and then put it at the end of a daisy chain of splitters.
Anyways, it's possible something like that happened or something got hit by a power surge during a storm. If your laptop is able to connect just fine elsewhere but not at your appartment, while other laptops can connect at your appartment just fine then I'd suggest:
1) Updating the firmware on your router (google searching router model plus firmware update should produce decent instructions.) 2) Updating your laptop's drivers and firmware.
Some very bizarrely specific incompatibility can occur that is often fixed by updating firmware and software. 8/4/2008 9:09:29 PM |
