So, are you getting a butterfly, a heart, a flower, or an indistinguishable spiraly design on your lower back?

why would you want to get your first tattoo in myrtle beach? budweiser logo?

do you live there? if you dont, its not a good idea. you need to get your tattoo where you live so in case something fucks up you can go back to that artist

no offense, this just has trashy written all over it. take your time to find an artist you like, it is your body/skin, and it is permanent.

IIRC, you have to go to NC anyway, so you might as well get it near where you live

BAD idea. Closest good shop I know of is in Charlotte if you want something that doesn't look like it came off the pics on the shop wall.

there are a few really good ones in Raleigh. In my whole circle of friends there are one or two that all of them swear by. I don't have any myself yet so I forget their names but a bunch of my friends have some elaborate custom ones done that look really really good.

i forgot i was in the lounge.

no, i don't know any good artists in myrtle beach, but if you need a recommendation for someone in raleigh, i can tell you a couple people to go to, and a couple people to avoid.

I love when I drive by No Regrets on Hillsborough I can look in at the people about to get tattoos, and I know whatever is going on inside their head is a bad decision.

I'm interested in recommendations in Raleigh. No need to fly to Houston if I don't have to.

Here will definitely be better than Myrtle beach. I just forget that some people aren't as picky and like having art instead of flash on me.

ill ask some of my friends who they use, might even be able to get pics. know several people who have or are working towards sleeves and have gotten most of it done in raleigh.

I go to Kevin at Tattoo Zoo http://www.kevinstattoozoo.com/ they've recently moved closer to campus to help increase their business. Kevin is super nice, and has helped me out a lot, I highly recommend him, or anyone in the shop. fyi, i drive from charlotte to come here to get work done, it's that important to me.. plus i have a mini crush on my artist, but don't tell gimp

I have a friend that got two pin-up girls done on his ribs by one of the girls at Phoenix Tattoo http://www.phoenixtattoostudio.com/ I think it was Annie that did his actually, i have no idea who did it, but it was a girl and her work was phenomenal.

Those are at least a good place to start, and then look through their portfolios (duh) and see if their style agrees with yours, etc, etc, etc...

Just make sure the tat is in a place that will be easily spotted while cruising the strip on the back of a bike or leaning out the window of a tricked out civic

Guess my standards are higher than most. I'll only let someone ink me if I would be 100% happy with having ANYTHING in their portfolio on me.

Personally, I don't like the idea of someone else's mistakes being tattooed on my body.

^^^I dont think your standards are higher than most, that is just a really stubborn philosphy. You are never going to like everything in someone's portfolio because they are going to have clients that want stupid looking stuff put on them, meaning that they will have done it the best possible and its still not going to look good. That is just a fact about tattooing imo. If you hold yourself to that "standard" then yes you are going to waste tons of money driving or flying to have people do just as good of a job as someone a lot closer. I've watched several of my friends get tattooed by the same guy in Raleigh and they have all gotten awesome work done - except for one friend. The guy made the design look MUCH better than the drawing the kid originally brought in, but it still looks kinda bad because the kid's idea and original concept drawing were not good at all (tried to tell him but he was being stubborn haha).

And if you do like everything in one person's portfolio they either A probably havent done enough to have someone request something retarded looking or B you just got lucky that all of their clients have a similar taste as you.

It is definitely a MUST to be picky and know EXACTLY what you want for something this permanent, but you also have to have perspective when looking through a portfolio of any kind.

edit:

Think of it like a music producer. A good producer makes the record sound the absolute best that it can. However, if the music written for the album is of poor quality, even the best A+++ production is not going to turn that music into a great album.

Nah, some people can take the most retarded idea and turn it into something awesome. I am not talking about subject matter, but the artistic quality of the tatt. Here's a heart with a name on it. THE lamest tatt possible, turned into something sweet

http://www.tattoosbynate.com/tattoos/tattoos_22346.html

If I could find somebody that could do something like this in the triangle then I might be happy. Sorry, but I have not seen a single portfolio of anyone in the Raleigh area that can do anything close to what I expect.

eh. i agree that is cooler than the lamer classic version...however that doesnt really go against what I was saying. Not every customer is going to want THAT kind of heart. He could make the suggestion to do that (ie completely change the design), but if someone wanted a basic heart and that same artist did it, is he now out of contention for doing your tattoo? Your logic just filters out too many people based on something not entirely in their control.

You're still basing it on whether you like the type of tattoo versus quality of the tattoo artist imo.

You forget that artists have CONTROL over what they put in their portfolio. If they do a shitty tatt, it doesn't have to show up there. The portfolio is their best work, and if it still contains lame crap that's a bad sign. I am NOT going to someone who is proud enough of doing a crap tatt to put it in their portfolio.

Yeah, I'd not ask for it, but it's a million times less retarded than the normal heart shit and the artistic quality is there.

well, it looks like you've found the one artist that has the "perfect portfolio" for you. maybe you should fly to houston to get your work done because there doesn't seem to be anything around here that makes you happy.

you dont have to go to houston to get shitty tattoos like those you posted
they are pretty bad anyway you look at it

if you think that is a good tattoo then more power to you ... but hey, to each his/her own and beauty is in the eye of the beholder

i am a big fan of Annie at Phoenix here in Raleigh, she will be doing my next tattoo on my ribcage (when ever i get the balls to go and get it) http://phoenixtattoostudio.com/artist.php?ID=2

New school is not for everyone and it has the potential to turn out VERY badly without the right artist. But when it's good I really like it. Just can't make myself like old school, no matter how hard I try.

My boyfriend likes old school but at least he likes grayscale (which I think can be sweet) and the old school that I find most tolerable.

DNL, are you talking about artistic quality or subject material? I'm talking purely about artistic quality, because a good artist can tattoo anything in a similar style.

Yeah, I think that's the look he was going for.

I just don't want the same style tatt everyone else has/does, I like the artists that are willing to try something new. Snake I want will be unlike anything I have seen, will definitely need just the right guy for that.

^hahaha that's awesome

i have a few ideas for more.

i have one i want to get really bad with codes (nothing corny, promise)
but
1. i dont know if cody will and im sure as hell not going to make him.
2. isnt that the precursor to breaking up? (lol)

i think i might just go and get it myself.
its only like 1" long and will take like 5 minutes

we'll see.....
