I've got a friend who wants to move somewhere on the NC coast, buy a house, and do the retirement thing. He'd prefer something small-townish, not a major tourist area, but with a gym and some kind of tennnis court facility within 20 minutes; Emerald Isle is already on the list. I haven't spent a bunch of time on the coast so any input you guys have to offer will be greatly appreciated.

He would probably like Manteo or Southport then.

If he likes a more rural feel he might like Oriental - although I'm not sure how many tennis options there are in Pamlico Co outside of New Bern.

I'd agree with Southport as well, and really a lot of Brunswick county.

If he is mainly looking to be on the water as opposed to the coast, then Washington, Edenton, or Elizabeth City might all be options...

If I buy a house on the beach, will the government pay me when it gets washed away in a storm?

I grew up 10 minutes outside Southport, and have lived in Manteo - I live in Kitty Hawk now. Neither are very much like Emerald Isle.

Southport and the surrounding area will have more of what you're describing than what Manteo/Nags Head/KDH/Kitty Hawk will.

If you are considering the more upper scale areas of the NC coast when you mention Emerald Isle, then you should consider places like St. James, Figure Eight, Bald Head, Duck, and Corolla.

Emerald Isle is retarded crowded in the Summer. Traffic on the bridge is horrible.
