This happened about 2 miles from my house on Monday (Colorado)
Quote : | "A mountain lion slunk into the master bedroom of an Idledale home early Monday, snatched a yellow Labrador retriever and vanished.
Officers are hunting the mountain lion and have set a trap, said Jennifer Churchill, a spokeswoman for the Colorado Division of Wildlife.
"A lion that will brazenly go into someone's bedroom . . . we need to be careful of," Churchill said.
The dog's body was found near the property.
Churchill said the residents had left open the French doors to their bedroom, apparently to cool the house, and didn't have screens.
There were dogs sleeping in the bedroom when the mountain lion entered between 4 and 4:30 a.m.
Idledale, between Morrison and Evergreen along Bear Creek, "is definitely in lion country," Churchill said. "It's not unheard of for unattended or easy-to-get-to pets to be taken by mountain lions in areas from Boulder to Evergreen."
Mountain lions are known to partially eat their kill and then cache it for later meals by covering it with leaves and pine needles, Churchill said. " |

The show Monster Quest had someone on there with a fuzzy picture of a mountain lion down near Bolivia in Brunswick County. Something had been attacking pit bulls and they think it might be a moutain lion. 8/6/2008 8:50:50 PM |

they are very common in these parts. my uncle shot one (yes you can hunt bobcats legally in NC) and had it mounted. looks great sitting in the living room corner. 8/6/2008 10:15:20 PM |

Here along the Cape Fear river in Bladen County there are vast tracts of woodlands and people often report cougar sightings. I have heard stories from people who I wouldn't put a whole lot of stock in, and from people who have spent their whole lives in the woods. I have heard of too many clear sightings from knowledgeable woodsmen to believe that they are not around. You can't dismiss it as a bobcat when it has a 3 foot long tail. The wildlife people deny their existence, but a neighbor who was raised in Crusoe Island and has hunted all of his life told a game warden once that he would bring him the next one that he saw, but the game warden told him there was a large fine for shooting one. We can't seem to figure out why it's illegal to kill something that doesn't exist, but nobody can get a straight answer. 8/6/2008 10:40:00 PM |

there's no fucking telling what's in the woods around here and the more they build shit, the more we're gonna start finding out.

If you did, you got really really lucky. I was talking to a wildlife officer that has worked at Umstead for more than 10 years. He said he's only seen a bobcat in the park twice, ever.8/6/2008 10:45:18 PM |

there was one documented in the roanoke river valley as early as 2000.
as in tracks sighted and a game warden finally saw one.
hunters in the area reported multiple sightings.

There have even been stories that the cougars seen around here are pets that got away from drug dealers in Brunswick Co. in the 80's, but nobody believes that. Bobcats are very plentiful in this area. 8/6/2008 11:09:15 PM |

some friends i know have a lot of land in johnston county near 40/42...we'd cook out and off in the distance you could hear the coyotes barking/yipping.. it is very distinct...different from a dog.... they put out some raw beaver meat about 100 yards from the house (in a field) and waited... about an hour later we heard noises and turned on the floodlights and saw about 5-6 coyotes eating the meat, they ran off with it.

Idk about big cats around here, never seen one, but 'yotes aren't unheard of at all. Best part is that it's open season year round. If anyone has problems with 'em around here, lemme know. I've got a new rifle that's itchin' for some predator hunting. 8/7/2008 1:35:41 PM |
