I'm probably going to have a school desktop in my office, however, I prefer to use my personal laptop. What's the best way to connect the two, so I can have access to the desktop through my laptop? The ethernet plug on the desktop would obviously be plugged into the school's network, so that's out. Also, would there be anyway (other than ftp, etc) to connect to my k and m drives through this connection, from my laptop?

Talk to the IT guy in your department and have him give your laptop wired access to the network. Plug your laptop into the network with the desktop. Profit.

Synergy will let you use one keyboard and mouse for both computers, it's a huge help when you have two machines.

When you say school desktop, do you mean like a unity lab machine, or just a school machine that you otherwise have full or limited admin access over?

I guess you could throw a switch into the cat5 port your desktop would be plugged in to. You know, dorm style.

NAT router, clone mac of your desktop to the router, plug laptop and desktop into router. problem solved

ok, the IT person said that I can't have a hardwire connection to my laptop, but I can use the wireless.

NC State's wireless is slow and unrealiable (in my experience). So that being said, is ^^ possible? And could someone explain in n00b terms?

Latest update. I got shitted in the end. 1 computer, 3 people. And it's now set up like a normal NCSU lab, where everything is "wiped" (as they say) overnight/when you log off, and all the other wonderful NC State computing BS.

There is supposed to be wireless, and the IT person said it works in that area. Everyone else that is around my office has said it doesn't work. I think I'll believe those people. That being said, the IT person said if I can't get a signal, that she'll give me a departmental wireless router. I'm thinking I can hardwire my laptop to that so I can have a faster connection.

^^,^putting in a new nic isn't going to help, since I only have 1 slot on my laptop, which will be used for internet.

I'm hoping that with both computers hardwired into the router, I can access the desktop that way. any thoughts?

um the port on your laptop goes into the new port on the desktop. You can share the internet connection.

oh yeh, I didn't think about that. would I need admin privileges on the desktop? I've never installed a network card. is it as simple as sliding it in or is there more to it?

I guess I may need access to install the driver...
