I know some Hispanics who call each other variations of Negro - Since in Spanish, negro just means black. It's a term of endearment; the lower classes in Latin America tend to be darker skinned (less of Spanish settlers in them). There is also a sizeable influence, esp. in the Caribbean, of African heritage.
