the apple store has the discs that will let you download them to your computer. Obviously you'll have to pay for them though.
or if you're on campus the bookstore..since they sell Macs there too.
oh and tech talk.

well either buy the external drive or find a friend with a Mac and use their drive.
if you had included that in your OP it would have been more helpful 8/19/2008 8:09:54 PM |

or get the cd
mount it on another os x box
share the contents over AFP
p.s. don't get the apple external drive, it's pretty but it's way overpriced. just get a usb dvd-rw from somewhere. 8/19/2008 8:36:17 PM |

this issue was fully discussed when the Air was released. You can use the CD/DVD drive from any networked Mac or PC to install anything onto your Air with a feature called Remote Disc
i'm sure instructions are in the little Macbook Air manual, or elsewhere http://www.apple.com/macbookair/wireless.html http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1777 http://support.apple.com/kb/HT11318/19/2008 11:20:07 PM |

Umm... It's pretty well priced for a portable bus-powered DVD burner.
Plextor http://reviews.cnet.com/dvd-drives/plextor-px-608cu/4505-3212_7-32340366.html?hhTest=1&tag=also $150
LG http://www.mobilecomputermag.co.uk/20071212211/lg-gsa-e50n-external-dvd-writer.html $90 (really 48 pounds)
Lacie http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?pid=10986 $99.99

o rly
i thought it was more expensive than $100 for some reason
oh well in that case, get the external superdrive, $100 isn't bad at all for such a tiny bus-powered drive.
p.s. do this: http://tnkgrl.wordpress.com/2008/06/24/macbook-air-superdrive-for-all/] 8/20/2008 12:47:08 AM |

You just have to be on a network with a mac that has a dvd drive. Hell, if you stopped by the bookstore when it wasn't insanely busy I'm sure one or two of the people there would be glad to use the macs they have on display to let you install your software. Failing that, I'm pretty sure they have a usb dvd drive or two they might be able to use.
I put special emphasis on the whole "not insanely busy" part; it's back to school rush after all and the people there are all probably half way to strangling each other let alone customers by now. Seriously, 5-6 people handling 1200 or so computer orders each fall plus all the other stuff... yeah can't be a relaxed bunch by any stretch.
^Yeah 100 bucks for a slim usb powered dvd burner isn't all that terrible. Look up the cost on the ones from Lenovo...

^ The remote drive sw works on Windows too.
And for Office 2004 the install was just to drag a folder. I don't know how the new one is, but if it's the same way, you could drag the folder to a USB flash drive, then from the USB key copy it to the Air. Even if this is not how the install is, you could probably just drag all the files FROM the disk to a USb flash drive.
This might even be faster than using the net drive thing too. 8/20/2008 2:49:46 PM |
