After getting fucked by the bus twice, I've decided on buying a bike or a scooter. Only determining factor is where I can park a scooter on campus. I see a lot of them at some of the bike racks near Harrelson and a few other buildings, but where is it actually allowed?

probably should get a motorcycle permit

they are cheap and easy to get and you can drive around the swing arms and park just about anywhere

How much are we talking. I have seen a lot of places to park motorcycles around campus, and theres always room to squeeze. I'm just tired of the bus either passing me at the stop (when it's in service/not full) or being 15 minutes late.

Thanks, I found the $ info a few minutes ago. And if I had a car parking permit the problem wouldn't exist. But I can't justify the $300 unless I get some FA at some point. I think I'm going to check with transportation and see if there are any cycle permits left. If so I'll get me one of those 50cc deals and sell it when I'm done.

Thanks for the help too!

Cool I'll do that then. Any idea what a 50cc used scooter will run me? And correct me if I'm wrong, but they don't require insurance right?

all motor vehicles that operate on nc roadways require insurance

it's cheap as hell for scooters though

as for price, it depends on what you get... whether it's new/used, etc... new, i'd say somewhere around $1500, used maybe $6-700? i've never had the urge to buy a 50cc bike though, so i really have no idea... haha

probably should, but i wouldn't bother...i don't know of anyone who has bothered to pay for a motorcycle permit for a 50cc scooter since they don't have license plates...what are they going to do, tow you? write you a ticket? boot the scooter? it won't happen...now, if you want to play it safe and you do already have a vehicle pass, get the $5 motorcycle one

otherwise, don't sweat it...you can park the scooter in motorcycle spaces or, technically, at bike racks

incorrect

half correct, i think you're both thinking of other states

scooters at or below 50cc (actually, it might only be "below," but don't quote me on it) do not require a license or insurance to ride on NC roads...you must, however, have a DOT-approved helmet (half or full) and wear it at all times while on the road

there is no limitation on how fast you can go on the 50cc scooter...but since 4-stroke 50cc scooters will run about ~40mph (2-strokes will go faster), and there's not much you can do to up this speed, that's about all you'll get

some other states have 20-25mph limits (not so much anymore, though) on their no-license/no-insurance scooters, so you'll see things like the honda metropolitan II, which is just a restricted metropolitan to keep it maxed out at 25mph

Well I live 2 or 3 miles from campus, so it's plenty fast for that. I'm just lazy and would rather not buy a bike.

^^^^ my husband has been pulled for going 45 down a hill on his - he was given a WARNING ticket, for exceeding 30 mph

http://www.ncdot.org/dmv/driver_services/drivershandbook/chapter6/motorcycles.html

"Legally a moped's top speed cannot exceed 30 mph" - moped, scooter, same thing

well, nuts...i consider myself pwnt

i had asked a state trooper friend of mine about all this when i bought my scooter and i'm repeating what he said...at first i thought your link might refer to raleigh only, but i suppose not

oh well...how do they give you a ticket if you don't carry a license? i mean, i do, of course...but if i say i don't have it, what can they do about it? i guess ask you to come to a police station with them?

either way, i'll just keep scootin' along at 38mph and hope i don't come across a cop with a mind to be a douche

well its just like they give someone a ticket for driving without a license I guess - he of course had his ID on him and I guess they wrote his information down from there, but when I read the warning ticket I just laughed, I thought it was pretty pathetic and a waste of tax payers money considering he got a warning for going 45 in a 55 mph zone

dunno if cops are like that in Raleigh or not - this happened in Timberlake actually, by a state trooper

For a 50CC scooter, you do not need to have a motocycle permit or even a driver's license.

on a 49/50cc scoot? 4-stroke? i think the newer (2006+) mets will do 41-42mph downhill with a good tailwind, but you're looking at $vermont to make them go 2-3mph faster (and i think they're the fastest stock 4-stroke scoots readily available right now)

i realize 3-4mph isn't a big deal (and in a car, this is probably true)...but when you're scootering, the extra mph is noticeable...it's the opposite of when i get 88mpg instead of 93mpg...5mpg is a big deal in a car, but in a scooter, it's just the natural variation...as calibrated as those detectors are supposed to be, i have a hard time believing he was REALLY doing 45mph...sounds like the cop might have rounded up

what does he ride, just out of curiosity? i'm not all that up on scooter trends, so it may be that their are some pretty quick 50cc scooters available (seriously, 45mph is pretty good...a higher top speed on mine is all i wish for )

You dont need a motorcycle permit for a scooter. Park at any bike rack.
