Do you put the handle up or down?I put the handle down so the spoon part or the tines can be washed better. Regular butter knifes go blade up but any really sharp knife goes in blade down, or is hand washed.

its not that hard. stop overthinking.[Edited on August 25, 2008 at 2:30 PM. Reason : i put mine in the dishwasher.]
8/25/2008 2:30:13 PM
why would you put the handle up?
8/25/2008 2:30:37 PM
sand blasting (i mean dish washing) expensive knives is a bad idea.
8/25/2008 2:31:30 PM
handle is always upand they are sorted the utensil type (fork, knife, spoon) and size (dinner/salad, soup/tea)/sharpness
8/25/2008 2:31:37 PM
The handle should always go up, so you don't put your fingers all over the clean part of the utensil that will eventually end up in someone's mouth
8/25/2008 2:32:02 PM
the first one in any section goes handle down and then with spoons the next one in that section goes handle up to prevent spooning.

^^how's that asthma threating ya?
8/25/2008 2:53:10 PM
You gotta alternate the way you put them in so they don't stick together.
8/25/2008 3:01:12 PM

i'd like to see some primary literature that suggests a relationship between silverware orientation and cleanliness
8/25/2008 3:29:35 PM
I always put them handle up, but I do spread the distribution of the types among the different compartments. For example if i go to put a spoon in, I will put it in a compartment that doesnt have a spoon yet, to prevent them from coupling and leaving food between them. Same for knives. Forks can be used as separators to keep two spoons apart if you must overfill a specific compartment.
8/25/2008 4:00:06 PM
up or down does not matter in terms of getting clean, unless you have a really shitty dishwasher. But I always put 'em in handle up
8/25/2008 4:16:56 PM
i just throw the shit in the dishwater....the water gets hot enough to kill any bacteria so who gives a shit if a little food is left on there...it might look gross but it's not going to hurt you
8/25/2008 4:24:40 PM
forks and spoons down, knives up. I've heard that steak knives face down can sometimes get jostled a bit and you risk breaking the tip off in the dishwasher, so I keep them face up
8/25/2008 4:25:21 PM
up or down is one thing, but remaining food is .not that i am above it, but i prefer clean silverware if i have a choice.
8/25/2008 4:25:43 PM
I dunno, lemme go ask her how she loads the dishwasher
