so me and punchmonk and the baby started driving to Pennsylvania this morning in our new car we bought this week. We are about 10 miles into our trip, driving north on I-77 when a SUV merges into my lane. I lay on the horn but he keeps merging. There's no shoulder, just a guardrail so I brake hard. My car begins to spin and I begin to correct the steering. I have to correct 5 times before we straighten out and pull over to the other shoulder lane. We did 2 complete spins and narrowly avoided having a semi run into us. We are all ok and the car is ok, but my bacon egg cheese bagel is all over the interior.
Be safe if you are traveling this weekend. <3 qntmfred punchmonk and maya 8/29/2008 9:50:52 AM |

Where's the part about how you caught up to the SUV, followed him to his exit, and then pounded his face in for nearly killing your family?

Glad you guys are OK.
I had something pretty similar happen once, only it was the fault of the driver of my car (who was not me). We did the two spins, came to a stop squarely within the lines of a lane pointing in the right direction, and then an SUV slammed into the back of my car. The driver was drunk, though, so he stopped, asked if we'd called the cops, then ran.
Makes you stop and think for a few minutes, if nothing else. 8/29/2008 9:56:07 AM |

people are stupid and 2 seconds away from killing you.
also--and i don't mean this to sound like an asshole, i promise--but even if you had to brake hard, you should've never spun a car out in the process, let alone twice. i maintain that me driving cars hard and often in excess of the speed limit is not, in fact, excessively dangerous, but ensures that I know what to do in a bad situation.
What kind of car was it? ABS equipped?
also, in the future, you'd probably almost always be better off just hitting the other car than losing control like that. it wouldn't be a dangerous impact--the only danger would be if the collision caused you to lose control of the car.

Turn into the skid. Do not touch the brakes. Do not touch the brakes. Do not touch the brakes.
If you are no shit completely out of control (i.e., it's spinning completely around backwards), then get on the brakes (and if it's a manual, go "both feet in"...push in the brake and clutch pedals)

haha, it's a little more than bent, fucktard. almost 8000 dollars worth of work. but i've got good fucking insurance.
also, I'm saying they are lucky as I was lucky. it's not often that you hit a deer in a sedan at 70 mph and it doesn't come through the windshield.

Was it a 540 on 540? That would be some irony there. One time on 540 shortly after some rain I did see a car zig and zag back and forth through three lanes of traffic perpendicularly and do at least a 360 and before coming to a stop on the side8/29/2008 5:20:44 PM |

Perhaps you should look into having a freight train horn installed in your little car. A big bark will do quite a bit towards getting those big SUV drivers away from them. You might go deaf if you use it (even once ) but they will stay the hell away from you. 8/29/2008 5:27:29 PM |

Glad you are ok.
Reminds me of my close call coming home to NC from Pennsylvania. As I was driving in heavy traffic in my cousin's SUV with his wife and baby and my mom the back tire blew out. I was able to safely go to a shoulder and and after a few hours change a spare on to it. Then continuing on at a slower pace since the spare tire weren't the correct size. Another hour later freaking the other back tire blew out. As I was going to the shoulder on the outer lane and hitting the warning bumbs they put on the road the SUV suddenly starting to go into a spin. Probably the poor traction of the spare. I could feel the SUV about to flip during the spin and time itself seem to go slower. I couldn't think how much traffic was on the road at the time so I knew I couldn't stop in the middle of the road in case of oncoming traffic as the SUV did it's spin and sliding across the highway (3 lanes) to the inner shoulder. The car tapped the guardrail and did minor damage (180 spin). I was happy the car didn't flip, go over the guard rail into a massive ditch or get hit by on coming traffic since the people in the back weren't wearing seat belt. For month after driving on any road with tight curves I had that inner feeling of the car spinning which i hated. 8/29/2008 7:08:25 PM |

I'm sure they do now.
If they don't, show them the pictures from the accident my bf and I both walked away from, thanks to belts.
And yes, I'm still incredibly anxious when riding as a passenger, and drive MUCH less aggressively now.
I got very, very nervous when a car fishtailed a bit ahead of me on Western earlier this week. I was already scoping out safe places to stop.8/29/2008 7:13:48 PM |
