Why did you have to fool me during my college career at NC State (2000-2004)? Every game I expected a good fight, and usually a win. Sliding down the grass hill in the infield only to charge the field and carry the goal post down Hillsborough street to Waffle House when we beat GT in the last sec of the game.....these times seem like a distant past. I was young and naive and did not realize that you were simply a breath of fresh air. I blame you for my complete disappointment in NC State football.
Love, Desh

So true. I was in school during the Rivers era as well. Just be happy that he was here during your time at state. He sure had me fooled into thinking we could be a competent football program as well. 8/29/2008 10:14:26 AM |

yes it was. Fucking great game. I'm showing my age, but the only bad part is when we all got pepper sprayed by the damn RPD cause we were gonna take the goal posts to the brickyard. 8/29/2008 10:50:37 AM |

our inability to recruit and prepare a quality qb during the river's era has set this program back and essentially erased all the positive ground that was done while he was here. 8/29/2008 12:53:43 PM |

I was fortunate to be in school for most of Philip's time too. My actual last game was the Gator Bowl victory (I graduated in Dec 02). I am really glad I am not a student now because I got to see a decent basketball team too with Hodge. Current students have jack shit to root for. I feel really bad for them. FUCK YOU LEE FOWLER. WILL YOU PLEASE DIE!!

^agreed. From 2000-2004 we had great football and pretty damn good basketball. We routinely beat UNC (thank you Sam Eagle), upset D00k a few times, beat FL State (football) like it was our job and made it to the Big Dance every year.
Although my dad was there when David Thompson played and won the Championship.....damn him. 8/29/2008 1:53:23 PM |

luckily i got to go to one and a bowl, but it has sucked pretty bad since, the best thing in recent memory is the ACC Tourney run in '07, and that is a sad sad truth 8/29/2008 2:34:38 PM |

I was just talking to someone today about how much confidence I had in NC State football and how it really had to do with Philip Rivers. Such an all around nice guy and great player. I also was there from 2000-2004 and some of my favorite memories at state involve football games. That includes the Ga Tech game. I remember sliding down that hill to the goal post and twisting my ankle. I was so sad when they filled in that hill with seats. Also jumping off the side of the student section to get to the field after the Florida State win.
one game I went to last year I sat in the student section, the students were so lethargic and I was trying to get them pumped up and was telling them about how it was with Rivers. They basically just rolled their eyes at me. 8/29/2008 9:07:58 PM |

I was pumped at work with my NCSU shirt on..watching the game on the flat screen...and yeah after Wilson got hurt it made me think of how fortunate I was to be at State from 98-03.
Rivers, Holt, TA, made my class like we were the shit..well and I guess for those 5 seasons we were......GOD..where have those days gone....?
But thanks for the kick as memories..lighting trees on central campus on fire via toilet paper....having random people on hillsborough street hug and buy me drinks, rushing the field numerous times...helping tare those damn goal posts down....I wont ever forget those days..thanks Holt/Rivers/Cotchery/TA...for giving me stuff to brag about to my UNC/Duke/ECU buds. 8/29/2008 11:39:53 PM |

Yea, great times. Phil was here during my fresh/soph year. Most memorable times: beating Clemson breaking NCSU record for wins in a season, victory at CF vs. FSU, Ohio State thriller (1st game). Not so much lately. 8/30/2008 12:12:07 AM |

Yup, I started in 98 and saw T. Holt pretty much single handidly beat FSU, carried the goal posts after we beat Donovan McNabb and Syracuse that same season, then I got the Philip Rivers era. Pretty good in the football until the time I left. 8/30/2008 10:38:17 AM |

Was there with Rivers. I was there 99-02 and was absolutely spoiled with names such as Holt, Rivers, Cotchery etc...
Rivers made you look fwd to the games and you knew it was going to be a fight with a good plays. I want to take my son to a game he is 3 and loves anything NC State, but damn, I don't want him seeing this shit.
I totally support this thread.

I was an undergrad from 99-03 and a grad student from 03-06, so I barely remember time Before Philip Rivers (BPR). I had 3 years of undergrad while Phil was here, and had a blast rushing the field after the FSU win in 02, then going to Jacksonville for the Gator Bowl win against Notre Dame. Also saw his senior year (and stood there stunned after his last home game was a loss). I was in grad school for 0-2 APR, and have been rather fortunate to be stuck in Upper Michigan for years 2-4 APR where I can avoid hearing about NC State news.
Some people are talking about how they thought the team's performance while Phil was at NCSU was how it would always be. I knew that there would be a drop-off after he left, but I never thought it would be so dramatic. This is the fifth season since he left, and we still can't find an AVERAGE quarterback, let alone a good or a great QB. That's what I find so surprising. Davis, Stone, Evans, Beck, etc. They're not even AVERAGE - they've all done bad! It makes me so sad. 8/30/2008 9:37:30 PM |

98 to 03 I graduated with PRiv and I respect ALL that he did for NCSU football. I did expect to win and I did expect to be in the "others receiving votes" for the top 25. I also was here when Tory Holt was a senior, that was thrilling life too---beating FSU in Carter was amazing. BBall was good too and Sendek carried our program to a place where we were at least respected.
State athletics (in the revenue sports) is dead. Kudos to any teams that are still doing well (gymnastics, track, women's bball) 8/31/2008 12:57:52 AM |

Ah, I too was part of the 00-04 era of great NCSU athletics. Was there for the GT game, the FSU game, the Duke (4 rows back) and UNC upsets. Good times. 9/1/2008 10:16:43 PM |
