So I am attempting to create a page turning effect...like as if you're reading a magazine...I've found plenty of tutorials but there are so many different options that they include, I can't fucking narrow down to the one thing I want. I finally got one very simple tutorial but for the LIFE OF ME, I'm not understanding how they are transforming one of the shapes. http://www.tutorialized.com/view/tutorial/Book-with-Page-Turning/2272
But I'm willing to do it any other way.....I can't think of any other way other than Flash and MAYBE some sort of scriptabulous script or something but I'm about to punch a hole in the wall. I would even pay to get one of the premade scripts for flash but I have a feeling I'm going to have just as much trouble.
Anyone ever do anything like this? 9/2/2008 8:33:20 PM |

I don't understand why clicking "Learn More about Flash Page Flip Effects" doesn't answer all your questions 9/2/2008 8:40:18 PM |

because it launches into some big discussion....and in any of the flash sources that are downloaded there are 10 files with 100 layers and figuring out which one is just for the effect I want is not working.
in that initial link, I downloaded the source file and can figure out most of it except how the fuck to adjust the shape in the manner in which you're supposed to.
I mean shit....is Flash the only way?"POQeiwf Pv 9/2/2008 8:51:09 PM |

...of how the effect was achieved.
It can be done less elegantly with JS

or with Silverlight

This is one of the most unsightly effects ever, no matter how it's done.
Your content should speak for itself without shitty gimmicks.

well I have a friend who wants a site that has a layout like a magazine.... with flipping pages. Now I'd prefer not doing it with flash because this means there's going to be SEO problems but I don't know how else to do it.... 9/3/2008 2:13:00 PM |

convince your friend otherwise. it's (kind of) cool the first few times. after that it's just annoying. 9/3/2008 2:24:19 PM |

while flash is neat, it should be used sparingly and an entire site SHOULD NOT be built with flash.
that kind of navigation will break the back button.
you've already mentioned SEO.
like ernie said, it is pretty 1998. it was a cool effect back then but even then it is just more than is necessary.

it makes it hard to print, which would be ironic considering he wants it to look like a magazine.
the internet is not supposed to be a book, magazine, newspaper, or other print media. it's different for a reason.
i'm sure your situation is unique and it might damage friendship or something, but if a friend of mine asked me to build a website that did that i would tell them [NO]. although i did do a site recently for a friend who insisted on having a "wild" font so it wasn't so typical, which meant the text had to be images. i got tired of trying to convince him to use a normal font and just did what he asked, so i can empathize.
