http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/09/02/AR2008090202730_pf.html

Quote :
"ST. PAUL, Minn., Sept. 2 -- At a secret meeting with Barack Obama three months ago, Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes says, he tried to clear the air with the Democratic senator by saying that his organization was determined to be fair but would not be "in the tank" for Obama's campaign.

During the sit-down in a Waldorf-Astoria hotel suite in Manhattan that included Rupert Murdoch, the network's owner, Obama expressed concern about the way Fox was covering him. "I just wanted to know if I'm going to get a fair shake from Fox News Channel," Ailes recalled him saying.

"Senator, you're the one who boycotted us," Ailes says he replied. "We're not the ones who boycotted you. Nor did we retaliate for your boycott."

The meeting appears to have eased tensions between the two camps, which began when all the Democratic candidates, complaining that the network favors Republicans, refused to hold any primary-season debates on Fox. After resisting invitations for months, Obama now plans to appear on Bill O'Reilly's prime-time Fox program on Thursday, the night that John McCain delivers his acceptance speech at the Republican convention here."

Hmmm, I thought he'd already done this. Must've been a different Fox News show. I think Hillary's been on O'Reilly recently.

As far as I know, Obama has never been on any Fox News affiliated show. I don't even think John Kerry was on there.

This only has the potential to go really well for Obama or really badly.

O'Reilly is a douchebag but he can be clever, and Obama needs to prepare well.

Also, it's clear he's doing this to steal some attention from the McCain speech.

The Palin situation can only work out well for Obama.

Obama's daughter must be pregnant.

Moron, this will only go well for obama. Oreilly is such a pussy when the actual interview takes place. He talks up a game, then defends the softballs he throws during the game. Dont sweat it. Obama will do great on it.

As long as he asks questions of this caliber :

"What is your favorite color, and why?"
"Do you like or dislike global warming?"
"What is a president supposed to do?"

...that'll easily make the hardest questions he's had to answer to date.

I like when Obama yesterday said, "well, she had a 12 million dollar budget a month to work with up in alaska, and i have 2 times that every week in our campaign budget."

oops, i guess he forgot she was also a governor with an 11 billion dollar budget. i hope he gets into those kind of comparisons...

either way, obama knows he has to do this and if he fails, he's sunk.

I'd love to see O'Reilly get into it with Obama the way he did with Geraldo. Not that it would be in any way productive or help anyone at all, but it would make for very entertaining television.

i'm not sure anyone suggested that

he does, however, for better or for worse, hold significant sway over a sizable number of right-wingers. An appearance by Obama on his show will either calm his viewers down a bit if they see he doesn't have some kind of evil masterplan to destroy America, or (probably more likely), just shore up their hatred of him.

This was the biggest surprise for me
O'Reilly "I think history will show Iraq was the wrong battlefield. And I think you were perspicacious in your original assessment of the battlefield."

I don't watch O'Reilly, so I don't know if he's said this before, or if this is his opinion now?

7 minutes? that's it? there's no reason to break that interview up except to draw more rating next week

O'reilly showed remarkable restraint. Admittedly, i've only watched a few episodes of his show, but typically he plays the "whoever argues loudest is right" game.

If you were reading a transcript it doesn't seem that bad, but O'Reilly's tone was very negative and dismissive. I don't see this helping out Obama that much. And the weird camera angle makes it look like O Reilly is looking down on OBama, which makes him look weak.

Agreed. Hopefully this will go a long way in silencing the morons (on both sides of the aisle) who assume Obama would do nothing militarily simply because he's a Democrat. That's just ridiculous.

I liked the interview. I've never once, not even for a second, watched O'Reilly's show, but I'll make a point to catch the remaining three parts, which is, of course, why he split it into four parts.

I've heard interviews with other O'Reilly guests, and they say O'Reilly does this on purpose on all his interviews.

I don't know who the left-wing version of O'Reilly would be (I guess Colbert comes the closest, ironically), but here's a McCain interview: http://www.crooksandliars.com/2008/09/04/delusional-john-mccain-peddles-alaska-is-close-to-russia-nonsense/

The tone of the interviewer is no where near negative as O'Reilly. even on the "tough" questions, side by side, just because of the tone, McCain comes off looking better relatively. It's no wonder that no democrat likes to go on Fox News, their obvious inherent bias is hard to fight.

Just watched it, Bill is a prick.

But it worked. Why don't you just say it.

Waste of carbon. Let's not actually discuss issues, let's just try to one up everyone that comes on my show.

I don't watch his show because I can't stand the lame yelling and dickish attitude, but does Bill O'Reilly ever actually have positions on anything, or does he just do what tdub does and point fingers and yell gotcha every other post?

The ground war is over and has been over for quite some.

Here is the obvious tone to the question and true response he(oreilly) was wanting to hear from him:

Oreilly didn't want to ONE-UP anybody. He didn't care about making Obama look bad, he(obama) does that constantly anyways with douchebaggery in other areas.

Oreilly just wants to hear our future commander in chief not only BASH our troops constantly but perhaps give them credit on a MASSIVE MILITARY URBAN WAR VICTORY AND SAY GG GUYS!!!

THATS IT!!! He(obama) barely hinted at the fact that it's working.

But no. He(obama) had to play the "I'm God" card and not admit to any flaws once again.

oreilly was not AS negative and dismissive as he could have been. i mean that is the point...that is oreilly. and if you've watched before, you know he's pretty good at ripping people apart. i didn't think it was that bad. i was scared to watch at first but i think barack definitely definitely handled himself well. i'm interested to see the rest for sure. i didn't even really see him being that dismissive. its journalism. he is pretty good at what he does as much as i disagree with him on....well pretty much everything. but i thought obama did pretty well and i can't wait to see the rest!

Obama has consistently praised the troops on the ground. He has always focused his criticisms at strategy and Administration-level decisions

The problem with O'Reilly, and from the sounds of it, anyone at the RNC, is that he will not listen to nuance or anything more complicated than "i'm right, you're wrong"
Just like when Giuliani the other night said
Quote :
"When Russia rolled over Georgia, John McCain immediately established a very strong, informed position that let the world know how he’ll respond as president at exactly the right time. Remember his words? Remember what John McCain said? “We are all Georgians.”

Obama’s — talk about judgment. Let’s look at what Obama did. Obama’s first instinct was to create a moral equivalency, suggesting that both sides were equally responsible, the same moral equivalency that he’s displayed in discussing the Palestinian Authority and the state of Israel."

So, McCain's first instinct is to pander with the "we are all georgians" bullshit, because Russia is always the bad guy, and Obama's first instinct is to not make any accusations of blame until he understood what exactly was going on. And Obama is the bad guy here? please....

I agree with this. Oreilly practically mumbled when he said "I think history will show Iraq was the wrong battlefield. And I think you were perspicacious in your original assessment of the battlefield." and most people (i know I don't) dont' know what "perspicacious" means, so this is pretty much a meaningless statement. Why couldn't he just say the Republicans were wrong? Oreilly said to so that if anyone asked, he could say "look I said this, I WAS being fair."

The Oreilly interviews, if the rest of them are like this, will serve no purpose other than to bolster Fox's ratings. The leftists watching it will say "Obama did a good job" because they'll be listening to Obama's words, and the righties will sasy "O'reilly got him, Obama really is a commie" or whatever it is they think about Obama.

I wonder if McCain will make another appearance on The Daily Show or Colbert before the election... he'd be smart NOT to at this point.
