okay...I purchased a 2.0GHz iMac last october with 1GB memory in it. when I purchased it, they ad/specs said it could support up to 2GB memory...(2x1GB sticks)
now apple is selling 2GB sticks, and I'm wondering if my imac could support 4GB?
any help answering my question would be great 9/3/2008 1:24:26 PM |

No. Go here and enter your model just to verify.

What he said...
Its likely the motherboard will only support 2GB(thats where that spec comes from). 9/3/2008 1:43:31 PM |

random other mem question, two computers....
laptop needs pc5300 2 x 1gb max, can i put 2 x 2gb in and have it work? desktop needs pc3200 2 x 512mb, can i put 2 x 1gb in and have it work?
reason I ask, its cheaper and easier to find these deals with more memory, more expensive to buy individual 512

that's like asking if tires will fit on your great grandmas car that we've never seen and you don't know the make/model of.
go to the website at the top of the thread and put in the models and see for yourself 9/3/2008 3:19:54 PM |

yes, i did go to crucial. my question is again:
if the max my board will support is 512mb per slot, what will happen when i put a 1gb in that slot. nothing? will it function at 512mb?
i just think its a bit silly to pay more for less memory.... 9/3/2008 3:21:24 PM |

find your iMac's exact model number (look under Apple Menu > About This Mac then click once on the word "version" to show you the Model) then look it up here to be sure http://support.apple.com/specs/#desktopcomputers
If you bought the iMac new last october, then you should have the "Mid 2007 iMac". In that case, they all support 4GB http://support.apple.com/kb/SP16
or, just paste your serial number (click the word "version" twice) into the search box here, and you can be for sure what model you have - http://support.apple.com/specs/ 9/3/2008 3:32:07 PM |

no, you can't put a 1GB stick in and hope it will act like 512MB

economies of scale, supply/demand. 512MB is not very popular now9/3/2008 3:33:37 PM |

didn't think so. just thought i would ask.
guess its either time to upgrade or shell out for some old obscure memory. 9/3/2008 3:34:23 PM |

thanks for the help...this is what I did:
I have a 2GB macbook capable of 4GB and my imac capable of 2GB. I'll be getting my 4GB today from crucial.com, will put that in the macbook, and put one of the sticks from the macbook into the imac...with 1GB left over...
all of this for $104...and to think I was going to buy my ram from Apple ($400 for 4GB!!!)!
thanks again! will inform of progress 9/4/2008 11:03:14 AM |
