So, a friend of mine who goes to State left his Azuraeus on and downloading while on campus and subsequently got a notice from NCSU saying HBO had contacted them and to "rectify the issue" or something, and that HBO can pursue legal action if they decide to.
What should my friend do in this situation? 9/16/2008 9:46:47 AM |

^ you know, you put in RIAA in the search, but if the OP didn't think that RIAA would be relevant (because, really, in this situation, that organization is not relevant at all), then they wouldn't have searched for that
all that said, yes, this has been talked about over and over and over again 9/16/2008 9:52:36 AM |

generally, here's what happens:
1.) ncsu contacts student and says "you've been caught downloading xxxx" 2.) student says "i'm sorry, i'll never do it again, i've deleted all of it, please forgive me" 3.) ncsu says "that's right, bitch...if you do it again, we're not going to cover your ass" 4.) student doesn't do it again on campus unless they're stupid or they enjoy legal battles

^^ even if that is true, which i doubt it is; it does not mean pirating music, movies, and software is not wrong.
seriously. most thieves are like "yeah, i know i steal, but i gotta do what i gotta do to get by"... but online piracy thieves have this whole self-righteousness thing going on. like if you steal music, it frees the artist from the tyranny of the record label. 9/17/2008 2:28:38 AM |

^^,^ politics are priority right now. and i'm not saying we can all go pirate whatever we want, just that you won't hear about mpaa investigating you until january, and a case brought so late would be very shaky.

This is like that "how to avoid a speeding ticket" thread. Just don't do anything you are too afraid to get caught doing. If you're going to pirate, then so be it. Just don't be too pissed off if/when you get caught. 9/17/2008 10:21:07 AM |
