I have made some a couple of times.

my friend who is mexican said that tortilla chips are a tex-mex thing...not truly mexican.

That's my understanding as well.

Much of the food we gringos think of as Mexican comes from the border region. You won't necessarily find it in, say, Tlaxcala or Chiapas.
