Online Editor
The online editor is responsible for the technical aspects of Technician's online presence.
Daily Duties
1. Ensures the quality and consistency of all online content.
2. Moderates online discussion boards in consultation with the Editor-in-Chief.
3. Addresses any technical issues related to the daily production of multimedia content.
4. Attends daily budget meetings.
General Duties
1. Actively works with section editors and photographers to determine the best way to package content for the web.
2. Actively increases web income by working with the business office to identify new online opportunities for advertising clients.
3. Works with design editors to implement new web designs when necessary.
4. Keeps Technician Editor-in-Chief, section editors and Student Media professional staff updated on all web-related issues.
5. Generates monthly reports using web statistics and analyzes those statistics to make recommendations.
6. Actively maintains familiarity with new web technology that can be utilized by journalists and photographers.
7. Conducts formal and informal training of staff to encourage technical independence.
8. Develops and maintains a relationship with the technical support staff of the current content management system.
9. Maintains updated documentation that details all processes used to deliver online content.
Qualifications
1. Demonstrated experience with technologies used by the current content management system (HTML, XML and CSS required; Java, JavaScript, Flash and SQL highly desirable).
2. Strong desire and ability to learn and apply new web technologies in journalism.
3. Strong ability to communicate and work patiently with others.
4. Experience with audio and video editing software.
5. Experience in journalism is preferred but not required.
