I noticed during the ECU game that a lot of people would hold up a U or H with their hands and making a whooshing sound whenever Eugene made a big play. Its pretty cool, but I'm not gonna like, it sounds like we're booing him 9/20/2008 5:36:52 PM |

This was done last year as well. It started almost immediately once Eugene got popular/well-known.
Actually, correction... you're saying people are going "whooosh" now? Not "YOUuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu" as they did last year? Fuckin weird.

Possibly part of the reason some people started doing it last year was to piss off/mock Miami, considering it started around the same time that we played them.
But personally I like it, assuming we can make it sound enough like "youuuuuuu" and not like a boo.

^^Seriously. They've got "University" in their name (just like everybody else), and yet they choose to use that as their recognizable symbol instead of the "Miami" part.
May as well have UNC, USC, the other USC, and pretty much every school in the country whose acronym starts with U start using it as a symbol.... fuckin' retarded.

^you are fucking retarded
The whole point of "The U" is that everybody else has it, yet Miami is recognized by it. Its a cocky/self centered/ego driven symbol that Miami is the "one and only" U.
Call it what you want, but for a smallish private school, its an extremely recognizable symbol/moniker, and wherever you go and wherever you talk football, people know "The U" as the Canes, and the Canes only....highly unlikely that anyone would be able to copycat without getting laughed at/ridiculed 9/21/2008 8:43:44 AM |

Yeah, and the Canes just took Texas A&M behind the woodshed and played toe-to-toe with one of the best teams in college football before exhaustion in the 4th quarter two weeks ago. Miami is going to be fucking awesome in another year or two.
And back in the day, Miami had "UM" on their helmets and jerseys and needed something unique to get recognition besides being known as "UM" and having a "UM" logo. So the marketing campaign and athletic director wanted something to be unique to Miami and developed a "U" logo. It worked.
5 national titles in 25 years in football and 4 more in baseball. I think Miami is doing just fine.

That was my whole point. We are in agreement. I simply believe that the idea of Miami being the ONLY U is fucking retarded, and that all other schools with U in their name should get together and mock the shit out of them.
Similarly, I think that all schools should call themselves "The" whatever for a bit to mock the shit out of "The" Ohio State University.
Wishful thinking, really, but I do wish pretentious stupidity would be mass-mocked more often.

^ That is stupid. Nobody ever said anything about Miami being the only "U". Its a marketing ploy with their logo from back in the 1970's rather than having a logo with "UM" or "M". Don't fault them for being original.
In later years when they were actually good at football, the whole schtick of "The U" and "Its all about the U" became popular because of the bicolored logo on their helmets when they were kicking the shit out of teams. 9/21/2008 8:33:35 PM |

Quote : | "The "U"
In 1973, UM’s Athletic Federation, the fund raising arm of the athletic department at the time, commissioned a local public relations expert to develop a distinctive logo. The University had gone several years with a variety of helmet and uniform changes and the Federation noted that a number of major colleges have the initials UM. Miami designer Bill Bodenhamer suggested the "U" idea, which lent itself to slogans like "U gotta believe" and "U is great". " |
The origin of "The U" was super cheesy and corny. Not pretentious. Miami wanted something original and unique because at that time, nobody cared about their athletics except for a couple good teams here and there. Miami was known as "Sun Tan U" and was a place for the Notre Dames and Penn States of the world to take a weekend vacation while getting an easy win.
The cocky, egotistical, brash, and swagger associated with "The U" came years later when they were kicking the shit out of people while wearing this bicolored "split U" logo on their helmets.9/21/2008 9:34:56 PM |

What gunzz said.
Quote : | "Don't fault them for being original." |
Also, how the fuck is that original? Original would be using the part of their school's name that IS NOT also part of every other school in the country. I understand that it's marketing, you're missing the point entirely. And the point is that the way in which Miami chooses to represent itself if simply dumb, nothing more.
Or are you just a Miami fan, Fitch?
I take that back, you're clearly not a UM fan, given ^. So... why are you so vehemently disagreeing with people who essentially agree with you? Stupid is stupid regardless of the origin.

I am a UM fan, UM alum (and NCSU), and current doctoral student at UM. So, yes, I do like Miami. I do think the reasoning in 1973 behind choosing a "U" is kinda lame and really cheesy. A lot of Miami fans would agree. But the split-U logo has been a symbol for Miami since 1973. And it is original and that was the intention.
How many other universities have a "U" for a logo?
None. I rest my case. 9/21/2008 11:51:31 PM |

For clarification..... Florida... they looked pretty decent against Florida. September 6. Miami played very tough against Florida until the 4th quarter when their youth, inexperience, and exhaustion caught up with them. Florida is who I was referring to. Not Texas A&M.
