I'm looking for some odd-jobs to make some cash right now. (Graduated in May, but will be a volunteer high school baseball coach starting in February so I am not looking for a real full-time job yet since coaching is my first passion..)
I'm working a ton part-time nights/weekends but would like to pick up some hours during the day and I thought the upcoming fair might bring some opportunities?
Do any of ya'll have any experience working at the fair? I don't even know what are possibilities. No, before any of you smartasses say it.. I'm not looking to be a freaking carney or whatever.
I saw they are hiring parking attendants at $7/hour but I am not interested in that at all.
Thanks 10/1/2008 11:54:06 PM |

we may try to add some people to our booth...it's actually a medical device and our ceo likes to build nc awareness at fairs (it fits in really well with fried oreos and twinkies). if talking with people and doing simple demos sounds interesting to you, pm me. 10/2/2008 1:12:33 AM |

I knew someone who did the carney thing for two or three of the fairs. He'll never live it down. 10/2/2008 3:05:07 AM |

I used to work at the WRAL/Fox tent in High School and I'd dress up like The Simpsons or King of the Hill characters. I made $25/hr. It was sweeet! 10/4/2008 7:26:26 PM |

I knew a guy who travelled with the fair for about 5 years. He was 25, but he didn't have any teeth because they rotted out after smoking too many drugs. F- Do not recommend. 10/7/2008 12:46:26 PM |

I would volunteer with the red cross at fair. It was usually very fun, then somebody would get hurt...

I used to, as well.
Except...the red cross sucked ass, organizationally.
After calling and leaving a message, saying that I hadn't heard from anyone about volunteering, I STILL never heard back. Despite calling repeatedly. I even just gave up, and tried to find out when the mandatory volunteer orientation was. Never was able to get that, either. I figured I'd just show up there, be like 'yeah, I wanna volunteer this year', and proceed as usual
Then I saw the volunteer coordinator out and about at the fair. She asked where I had been and why I wasn't volunteering that year.
I've heard that Wake EMS has since taken over providing first aid at the fair (as opposed to just sending teams for shift coverage)
I might do that, since I actually have a valid cert now (I just did registrar in the past)

Carnies are the worst. One time at the fair back in 2005 I was doing the game where you have to throw a baseball and knock down some cans. Of course they make the cans heavy as hell so you have to be Nolan Fucking Ryan to have a chance. My first two balls bounced off the side so for my third throw I wound up and crow hopped and unleashed the dragon, probably about 85 mph. The ball nailed the bottom can dead center and ricocheted straight into the carnie's shoulder.
He wasn't paying attention when I threw and the ball hit him hard enough that he thought I threw it at him directly. He weighed at least 300 pounds, but he hopped over the counter with surprising agility and grabbed me by the collar and was like "What the hell, bro ?" I was actually drunk enough that I would have tried to fight him if my friends hadn't apologized to him profusely and sworn it was an accident. The guy was a real douche about it and wouldn't even give me my prize. 10/7/2008 3:08:21 PM |

Quote : | " Desperate job-seekers flock to State Fair

Raleigh, N.C. — The highest unemployment rate the state has seen in six years has many job-seekers scrambling for two weeks of work at the 2008 North Carolina State Fair.
People waited in line for as long as four or five hours Monday morning to submit an application with the state Employment Security Commission, which is screening people for jobs at the fair. Most of the jobs are part-time and involve serving food or setting up rides on the midway.
The State Fair opens Thursday and runs through Oct. 26.
"People are desperate for employment. I think that's the basic reason the line is so long," job-seeker Rufus Hockaday said.
The ESC office at the State Fairgrounds opened four hours early Monday – 8 a.m. instead of noon – to accommodate the crowd.
By mid-morning, though, the frustration of those in line began coming to the surface. People shouted about not being served, and one woman was arrested after police said she caused a disturbance.
ESC spokesman Larry Parker said agency officials expected to receive more than 1,000 applications, and had filed 650 by noon Monday. Only about 400 people will be hired, he said.
"This year, just because of the way the economy is, you're going to get people who are desperate for money," Parker said. "(The State Fair offers) a good week and a half worth of money."
The ESC office at the fairgrounds will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day through the end of the fair.
"It's temporary work, but it's immediate," Parker said. "An immediate paycheck is better than having to wait."
Many of those in line agreed.
"The economy's bad, you know, so I came out right about 6:30 (a.m.), 7 o'clock. (We've) been standing here, (and) hopefully, with thanks from God, maybe we'll get a job – maybe a lot of us will get jobs," William Whitten said.
"I'm patient. I don't have a job, so I'm going to sit it out," Lewis Wilson said. "I've been unemployed since February. I've (sent) about 105, 107 applications, (been on) three interviews, (have a) good strong work history, (am a) veteran (and am) retired. The work is just not there."" |
