i'm not doing so well in one of my classes. i would just drop it, but then i would be below 12 credit hours. is credit only the best way to go in this situation? also, if i did credit only in the class, would it transfer to another school if i chose to go somewhere else?

what class is it? there are some things that you don't want on your transcript as credit only if they are in your major

if you're having a lot of trouble in the first month of your first semester you may want to rethink your major.

I'm pretty sure you cant do credit only. You have to have at least 12 credits that are actually graded.

Credit Only doesnt count for a grade.... putting you below the 12 hours.

i'm pretty sure you can take it for credit only and have it count...if you audit it, it doesnt count toward your hours though, iirc...i took a credit only class last semester and i still had 18 credit hours...might want to make sure you dont have to take it as a grade for graduation requirements though

what is your major? most people don't do well in CH101 if you're an engineer and not big on chemistry. you just hafta make it up in other classes.

This is NOT true. You have to have at least 12 credits that are graded to be consider for the Dean's list. You need 12 credits in general to be full time.

I took 9 credit hours for a grade and 6 credit only one semester when I took two free electives in the same semester and I was more than fine.

As a graduating chemistry major whose already completed my other majors, I can tell you that the least of your worries should be "choosing a major" or deciding to change a major, etc... during your first year of college. Its actually ridiculous that you are asked to choose a major as a freshman in the first place, but that isn't really pertinent to this discussion.

CH101 seems daunting to about 90% of the freshman I tutor. You are not alone, in fact you are part of the vast majority. I seems students are used to being in high school where averages on tests are "B+" and just going to class is enough to succeed. This isn't going to be the case in college, which you will find out over time. The fact is, a class average of 73 is pretty typical of every CH101 section (and its actually *above* average for many sections). If you are finding that you aren't doing as well as you'd like, the attitude shouldn't be to jump ship-- instead you should use the opportunity to learn how to study, what to study and to develop your skills as a student. These things (as you will find) are so much more valuable than an average letter grade in freshman-level course. Learning to study, particularly chemistry, is not an easy undertaking-- so don't beat yourself up if you are struggling. Rise to the challenge and you'll get there.

Lastly, from chem major to chem major: don't use CH101 as the sole gauge of your interest in the major. If you are having trouble in CH101, it doesn't mean the whole degree will be "too hard" or that you won't like chemistry in general-- it could be many other factors, or it could be that chemistry is not for you. But, you shouldn't focus on that for the time being. If you'd like to PM me and tell me more particulars (What section of CH101 you are in, what stuff you are having trouble with) I can more than likely set aside some time over the next couple of weeks to guide you a little bit with the rest of the course material, should you decide to stick with it.

Check into the many tutoring services that are offered through the university. For these freshmen classes, there are tons of places to find help for them as long as you're willing to look for them. It's only october, so in actuality you have plenty of time to make up ground that has been "lost" so to speak. I think my test average in chem101 was around 79 or 80. I ended up balling out the final and got an A in the class, so don't give up hope and jump ship just yet!

Yeah. I wish I was in my friend's chemistry class. They're just now working with Lewis Structures and all of those things, so I guess they move pretty slow in there. Do you like that class? I dread going to it...

One semester I had only 6hrs (started with 18) and I lived on campus and nothing happened. Take it for credit only, it counts toward the 12.

I've heard Petrovich is an excellent teacher if you seek her out.

try going to her office hours and figure out where you went wrong. Go to the SI? sessions before the test. When I was a freshman the TA would basically review everything that would be on the test. If you're having trouble with webassign, go to all the SI sessions. In my experience with the lower level sciences (PY 205, 208, CH 101) if you do the webassigns with maybe 1 or 2 other people and figure it out together, that was the best way to learn the material.
