"Wilson 'wills' himself back

O'Brien credits NCSU redshirt freshman quarterback's mental outlook for return to lineup

Sheer willpower propelled N.C. State's Russell Wilson to overcome injury and return to the starting quarterback job for Saturday's game against Boston College.
That's how coach Tom O'Brien tells it, at least. O'Brien announced Wilson's return Thursday after practice. Wilson missed last week's loss to South Florida with an injury that O'Brien was told would keep him out longer than it did.

"Everybody comes back from injuries differently," O'Brien said "Some guys heal faster than others. A lot of it has to do with his mental outlook. He's so positive in everything and wants to be so [much] a part of this that I sincerely believe that he willed himself to get back on the football field."

One of N.C. State's top targets in the passing game also might play, as tight end Anthony Hill is listed as probable with a strained chest muscle. Hill hasn't played since the Aug. 28 opener at South Carolina.

Two other starters whose status was in question are out for Saturday's game. Linebacker Nate Irving (ankle) and left offensive tackle Julian Williams (shoulder) won't play against Boston College.

O'Brien has never revealed the nature of the injury, but a source close to the program said on condition of anonymity last week that Wilson hurt his right (throwing) shoulder in the first half of N.C. State's 30-24 overtime win over East Carolina on Sept. 20.

Wilson, a redshirt freshman, had the best game of his young career against East Carolina. He was 21-for-31 for 210 yards with three touchdown passes.

"He adds a little something to it with his legs," O'Brien said, " ... and with their pass rush, he's going to take care of himself on Saturday."

Last week, O'Brien said, Wilson spent most of his time in the training room trying to get healthy. He also attended meetings and watched practice.

Backup Harrison Beck replaced Wilson in last week's game. Wilson has practiced this week and performed well, O'Brien said.

Wilson also did not play at quarterback in the Sept. 6 game against William & Mary after suffering a concussion in the opener at South Carolina.

"It looks like he's at full strength [now], and he's practiced well," O'Brien said, "so we'll find out Saturday how he is."

this is foreshadowing

Wilson will seriously injure himself in this game. He is playing through an injury for a season that is lost. I hope he does well, but I have a bad feeling.

if we beat BC tomorrow, we will be 3-3 so far. If we continue that trend we will be 6-6 and bowl eligible

also fwiw, TOB's first 2 years at BC, the Eagles had losing records...then a couple years later he was consistently winning 7-8-9 games a year
