finding one with a working battery will be

aim for the $400 mark, though you can find some VERY basic ones for right around there (if you want one of those 8-10" ones, you can definitely do it)

How would a Dell D600 with a 1.6GHz Pentium M, 512mb ram, 14" SXGA+ display, CD-RW/DVD, and a good working battery for $300 sound? Legal copy of XP Professional already installed.

I've got a Toshiba I'd probably sell for $400.. I'll get you the specs tomorrow. It has XP on it, I believe 2gb of ram, 120gb hd, etc.. I can put XP on it if you prefer. I bought it then got a laptop through work and never used this one--it has sat under my desk for a few months. I should have sold it when it was worth more but never got around to it
