Dutch abortion ship sparks controversy in Spain
http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=081015182545.kro529yr&show_article=1
Quote : | "A Spanish pro-life group said it plans to protest the arrival on Thursday of a Dutch boat that is offering to provide abortions that circumvent Spain's strict laws.
The boat is due to anchor off the Mediterranean port of Valencia, the Dutch non-profit organisation Women on Waves said on its web site.
From Friday, it will offer abortions on the ship in international waters under the Netherlands' more liberal abortion laws.
This "symbolic initiative" will allow "abortions outside Spanish law for the first time in Spain's recent history, but without violating it," said Spanish gynaecologist Josep Lluis Carbonell, one of the promoters.
But it has already sparked controversy.
Valencia's conservative mayor Rita Barbera termed the plan a "provocation that has sparked indignation."
The anti-abortion group Provida in Valencia said its members plan a protest aboard a smaller vessels when the boat arrives.
Spain decriminalised abortion in 1985 but only for certain cases: up to 12 weeks of pregnancy after a rape; up to 22 weeks in the case of malformation of the foetus; and at any point if the pregnancy represents a threat to the physical or mental health of the woman.
But the Socialist government last month said it plans to introduce a new law that will offer greater legal protection for women who wish to have an abortion and doctors who carry out the procedure.
The Women on Waves ship visited Ireland in 2001, Poland in 2003 and Portugal in 2004, sparking protests in each country.

I can't wait until boats from Arabic countries start sailing up to northern Europe to assist the poor residents there with female circumcision and honor killings in international waters.. 10/16/2008 3:22:57 AM |

I'm surprised no one has tried this with drugs. Surely there must be a country with no narcotics laws that they can fly their flag under. 10/16/2008 10:13:24 AM |

^^ Pretty much every country in the world has criminalized drugs and I'm sure the United States would have no problem busting some shit like that. 10/16/2008 10:21:21 AM |

So these people, what do they get out of it? Some evil kind of satisfaction? If they so want to help people, perhaps they should be helping poor starving Africans, typhoon/hurricane hit people, or maybe, just maybe, freeing sex slaves in Holland, you know, people who can't help themselves and need outside help.
If you want to abort but you can't because of the laws, tough luck, bitch (legitimate cases are allowed under Spanish law, as noted). Maybe you should have thought of that before fooling around? You are neither starving, nor enslaved, nor oppressed, nor disaster-stricken.
I seriously can't understand what these assholes get out of it? White people go all over the world to help the poor, malnourushed, oppressed, women, children, etc. And I can definitely see the satisfaction there, because these people NEED help from outsiders. But helping women to get abortions? That's just twisted. 10/16/2008 10:56:05 AM |

^ From their About Us page:
Quote : | "Every 8 minutes somewhere in the world a woman dies needless as a result of illegal, unsafe abortion. In response to this violation of womens human rights and medical need, Women on Waves sails to countries where abortion is illegal. This is done at the invitation of local women's organizations. With the use of a ship, early medical abortions can be provided safely, professionally and legally. Women on Waves aims to prevent unsafe abortions and empower women to exercise their human rights to physical and mental autonomy, by combining free healthcare services and sexual education with advocacy. Women on Waves is a non-profit organization." |
I'm sure they get plenty of non-evil satisfaction from helping these women.10/16/2008 11:03:46 AM |

I can't feel sorry for these women unless they conceived in an arranged/forced loveless marriage.
Even in countries where abortion is illegal, it is allowed in cases of rape, incest, danger to mother's health, etc. So, I can't feel sorry for women who get knocked up because they are too stupid to use birth control, or to use it properly, and then want to abort because being pregnant in their societies out of wedlock is taboo or illegal. And Spain is hardly a country where woman are forced into marriages, where birth control isn't available, where people are ignorant/illiterate, etc.
I am sure every 8 seconds somewhere in the world, a woman is beaten by her partner. They deserve and need help.10/16/2008 11:21:10 AM |

Then go start your own charity to help those people that you deem worthy of help. This is a charitable organization, they aren't forcing people to get abortions, they aren't wasting your tax-paying dollars, they are being invited by women's organizations in these other countries. I'm sure they will continue to do just fine without your support.10/16/2008 11:26:22 AM |

^^^ Then why Spain of all places? I seriously doubt that the 8 minutes statistic applies to anywhere in Europe. If they were really interested in helping lower that statistic, they should go somewhere where they would actually make an impact like Iran, Somalia, or Indonesia.
Then again, I suppose those countries would probably seize or sink the ship. 10/16/2008 1:31:03 PM |

See, if you weren't talking out of your ass, you would know sex trafficking is a major problem in Europe, especially in the Netherlands. whoops.10/17/2008 4:05:08 AM |

^^ Unfortunately, there are those who abuse prostitution laws in the Netherlands by establishing brothels that are staffed with sex slaves from Eastern Europe. Its a rampant problem. I think the government there has taken steps to crack down on it, but its still a problem that their nation struggles with.
I should point out that human trafficking is an issue in other parts of the world as well despite an individual nation's approach to prostitution. However, there is no denying that it is an acute problem for the Netherlands and probably draws more attention there because its side-by-side with the legal sex trade. 10/17/2008 11:49:17 AM |
