. . .calling all of western Pennsylvania racist.
Murtha apologizes for calling western Pennsylvania 'racist'
Quote : | "Murtha's apology came after the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette posted a story on its Web site Wednesday that quotes the veteran Democratic congressman as saying, 'no question that western Pennsylvania is a racist area,' and predicting that those attitudes could cost the Illinois senator on Election Day." |
http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/10/16/murtha.racism.apology/
Now, if Murtha would just apologize for calling U.S. Marines in Haditha murderers. . . .
PS: In case some of you aren't familiar with ABSCAM (and I suspect you aren't):

Yeah, way to totally avoid addressing the OP. Some of you are so fucking smug.
Concerning Murtha and the Haditha incident, no Marines have been convicted of murder, other charges have been lessened or dropped completely, and Murtha is being sued by several of the Marines--and rightfully so.
Now, are you going to condescend some more or can you muster an actual response as to why "ABSCAM" Murtha felt the need to smear a whole region of his own state as racist? 10/17/2008 10:36:33 AM |

how can what I said be construed as partisan? I don't give a damn what party Murtha is - he called a spade a spade. big deal.
Do I agree with his assertion that they are murderers? Eh, not sure. What happened in Haditha never should have happened, and the soldiers should be punished in some fashion. But I also have to imagine this kind of stuff happens much more regularly than we ever hear of (although maybe not to the level of Haditha) and it's kind of unfair to pull these guys out and threaten to send them to jail for the rest of their life when guys who do similar things get a slap on the wrist. I also find it crazy that we, as a country, send our military into a country to overthrow the government, kill 10s of thousands of civilians directly and indirectly through bombs, missiles, and stray gunfire, but then a few additional people are killed (i.e. 100,000 dead through other means, but it was the 100,024th dead person that really mattered) and all of a sudden we set up murder trials.10/17/2008 10:45:48 AM |

get off your high fucking horse.
There are large areas of the country that are racist. Just like with any stereotype or generalization, not everybody who falls under the umbrella of the generalization are equally guilty or guilty at all.
Hey, here's a thought - Murtha is from southwest Pennsylvania. Maybe he knows what he's talking about10/17/2008 10:50:38 AM |

The South is an easy target. What about serious racial problems in New York, Boston, Chicago, and Los Angeles, just to name a few? Should we also brand those entire cities as racist? And a city is an even smaller area, if not geographically then conceptually. 10/17/2008 1:09:16 PM |

Opposing Murtha
Quote : | "On Wednesday, October 15 — three weeks away from Election Day — Murtha sat down for a chat with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He explained that he didn't think Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama would fare well in his district because 'there is no question that western Pennsylvania is a racist area.' Murtha’s remarks were even caught on camera.
Almost immediately afterward, Russell was up with ads pillorying the congressman for the comment. [b]As if that comment weren't bad enough, Murtha pulled off the neat trick of shooting himself in the foot while it was still in his mouth, by helpfully explaining that he didn't mean to call his constituents racist. Rather, they are just 'really redneck.'" |

Well, maybe they are terribly racist in that area... just like urban areas have a high demographic of low-income families, perhaps western-pennsylvanian areas have a high demographic of racist bigots.
Truth or not, it is still incredibly stupid of him to make such statements about his own constituents. On the other hard, though, I'm not calling for his head simply because he stated an unpopular truth (assuming it is truth... if not, then he's just a dick and deserves to get beaten in the coming election) 10/23/2008 4:44:28 AM |
