If you think about it, none of the native people of N. America really started to ever use any type of refined metals. I think counting 400BC as the stoneage is valid.

It actually says "Scientists believe that the drug being used was cohoba, a hallucinogen made from the beans of a mimosa species," in other words, they were imbibing DMT, which is not an opiate.

It's an extremely powerful hallucinogen, and from what I've heard, doing it once every few years is enough. They certainly weren't junkies when it came to this stuff. Also, as has been mentioned countless times I'm sure, simply using an opiate in no way makes you a "junkie." Plenty of people have smoked opium once or twice or shot up once or twice. You don't always get addicted. Probably not a smart thing to try, but not always something that you'll be addicted to.
