According to my medical books, the failure rate of condoms can be as high as 20% in an ideal situation. Pre-ejaculate fluid can and does contain viable sperm, particularly in young, sexually active men. And finally, it *is* possible for a female to get pregnant before, after and during her period. In a nutshell: best practice is birth control pills + condoms, or refrain from the activity altogether if they idea of pregnancy scares you that much.
