Hey guys, My term paper for this class is due at the end of this month. I'm having trouble finding scientific sources for this paper. The topic is "Physiological and Social Value of the Chicken Comb". Any advices as to where i should start? I've tried looking up at the library already, i can barely find any journals refering to the chicken's comb. THANX!

That means you can't use random websites with random, un-cited, non-scholarly facts on it.

You CAN use the internet to search peer reviewed journals and various databases..... do you understand the distinction?

For example: From the library web page, go to "find articles", access a major database such as "web of science" and type your query: chicken + comb + physiology . . . or something to that effect and it will return hundreds of articles. When you find one that is a good match for your particular interests, look at the articles that are cited in that particular paper and then look those up using the library database and so on... Its simple. This is how everyone finds scientific sources, professors and students alike.

You can't be for real....

Find a book on chicken anatomy. NCSU has a huge selection of books on chickens, we probably have the largest selection of chicken related material of almost any university in the world. So go, knock your self out. Get book, find section on the chicken comb, profit.(use their references to find other sources).

Man....I took that class oh so long ago. He had some kind of surgery and it was team taught by the department. Sam, Carm, Dr. Ferket, Dr. Modziak, Dr. Petitte, Dr. Croom, Dr. Brake, and the lot of them. It was the way I learned who was in the department anyway. This was of course before Sam was the Dept. Head.

I used Pubmed heavily But I had an easy topic. Photostimulation (Pros, Cons, and Value). Pubmed was a good place to find papers and if you log in through the the NCSU system you can actually read the papers. Look probably 1950-1970s. I am guessing you want to look at anatomy of the chicken type papers. See if you can get a copy of Carm's book. He had all his sources at the end of the chapter and you might find something there. There are many kinds of combs, I am sure there must be a comparative paper from a long time ago trying to determine why.

All you have to do is find 1 solid paper and see what kind of papers referenced it and what that paper references. I did a google scholar search. There are several papers there to get you started.

Also, if you have not considered it, Dr. Siopes (if he still teaches it) has an amazing Comparative Endocrinology class. It was amazing! I think it is cross list but it is PO524.
