my parents learned early on to just give us a $ cap, and the kids go and create an order sheet online with links to items and sizes / colors.

You know, every single year I tell my parents what I want from them, and then I say, "PLEASE don't get me any other little doodad-type things that you just think are cute or whatever, because I already have way too much stuff that I don't need and really don't want to accumulate any more of it." Yet lo and behold, every single year ... little piddly crap shows up. Then I feel obligated to keep it. I don't think you should feel bad for making it easier for other people to shop for you. And doing your part to make sure you don't end up with something you'll never use, that someone gave you because they couldn't think of anything else. (Right now, I'm thinking of a trio of ripstop micky mouse clutch purses that a certain very hit-or-miss gift giver in my family gave me for a birthday present a year or two ago).

Hell, I've told my father that if he didn't give me a wishlist, he was getting coal on christmas. He never gave me one, so I contacted the blacksmith organization, and found a supplier willing to ship me a small quantity of bituminous coal, and wrapped it up. we just started the christmas spreadsheet this weekend - it helps me keep an eye on what i can spend (so i don't go overboard).

i don't really want someone to give me a list of items that they would like - i think it's far more fun to find something that they would love or something they wouldn't typically buy for themselves. i love giving presents!
