When I want to crop a picture, the crop selection is limited. It is the same thing that happens when you hold shift and use the square selection tool.

When I click to drag, the mouse will travel farther than the selecting box will. What is that option called so I can de-select it.

Sounds like you have a constrained aspect ratio or fixed width for your selection tool.

On the toolbar at the top, there should be an option to clear the "ratio." I don't have PS on the computer I'm on and can't remember it exactly. It's where the check and X mark are.

aahhh good call.

Thanks. Turns out I had restrictions on it. like pixels and size. i just clicked the clear button!
