"light" meaning no more than 2 drinks per week...but it still seems like a bad idea...who can't give up alcohol for 9 months unless you're an alcoholic?http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/7699579.stm

1-2 drinks a week might be beneficial for a pregnant woman with kidney problems or only one kidney.
10/31/2008 9:07:29 AM
I knew that you could have a glass of wine every now and again. Not 2 drinks EVERY week though....that's a little crazy.
10/31/2008 9:08:14 AM
^^ i don't think it's the health of the woman that they're concerned about...it's the unborn child^ i've heard that, toolook, i'll be the first one to tout the benefits of alcohol IN MODERATION...but when it comes to risking a child's life, giving up alcohol for 9 months seems like the safest course of action[Edited on October 31, 2008 at 9:10 AM. how is 2 drinks a week different from every now and again?
10/31/2008 9:09:45 AM
amna probably had a glass of wine or two per month while she was pregnant]
10/31/2008 9:10:59 AM
also, how did they come to these conclusions? did they just ask the mothers how much they would drink while pregnant and HOPE they were telling the truth?very scientific approach, there^ i don't think i'd sweat it if my pregnant wife wanted to have a glass now and then (and 2/month spread out over weeks between glasses qualifies, IMO), but it still seems that giving it up completely might be the safest course of action[Edited on October 31, 2008 at 9:12 AM. when the mother's kidneys are supporting the unborn child, and the kidneys were already in a stressed condition from supporting one life to bebin with, we are talking about the health of the unborn child.[Edited on October 31, 2008 at 9:13 AM. Reason : typo]

I drank 5 glasses of merlot during the entirety of my pregnancy and had one beer. I was thinking that drinking red wine might be more beneficial than beer. I also ate tuna sushi two or three times.[Edited on October 31, 2008 at 9:13 AM. Reason : wow....was it that many? qntmken.]
10/31/2008 9:12:29 AM
^ yeah, i'd think the red is the best option, since it provides more benefits than just alcohol...the tuna, though...
10/31/2008 9:13:39 AM
I think abstaining is the best way to go.Some idiots are going to look at the study and say hey kids born to those who drank during pregnancy were smarter, so let's drink more! The beneficial effect of red wine can be had by drinking red grape juice and eating a variety of fruits and veggies. (superfruits: blueberries, pomegranates, goji berries, acai berries, prunes, strawberries, raspberries, kiwis, etc)[Edited on October 31, 2008 at 9:23 AM. Reason : ]

I could not drink juice while I was pregnant. I am type I diabetic so I could barely eat fruit as well. The diet I was on was killer. I asked my OBGyn about the wine and she said that was ok.
10/31/2008 9:16:09 AM
I have always read that fruit is fine if you are diabetic, and especially if you eat them with a meal...?
10/31/2008 9:19:11 AM
not while pregnant. The Jovanovich diet sucks ass. I am a pretty healthy eater wo that diet but it restricted me like nutso. Fruit is prob my favorite food and I drink juice often so I was struggling mad dog there.
10/31/2008 9:26:52 AM
damn. if i were a woman i'd have my kids sucked up just to keep you filthy hippies from crying about their well being
10/31/2008 9:31:19 AM
^^ Why not while pregnant? (I don't see what's the difference) And what is the Jovanovich Diet? It is not on wiki.

Insulin is a hormone and while you are pregnant hormones are out of wack and don't act the same. My body was not dispersing insulin on a normal carb ratio and since fruit and juice are simple sugars there is no real understanding or indication of how the insulin will be matched up to those carbs. Staying power in food and matching the insulin dose is what makes fruit and juice a no no while pregnant. It could jack my sugar up immediately and then make me crash as soon as my body connects there is insulin floating my system.I could not eat crispix at all. That was another disappointment.

Pretty much any doctor out there will tell you that you are unlikely to harm your baby if you have the occasional drink while you are pregnant. They cannot tell you that there is no risk to drinking while you are pregnant or exactly what the limit is because there isn't really any proof out there.HOWEVER, I will tell you that if you have so much as a sip or take a freakin' antacid while you are pregnant and something ends up being less than perfect with your child that you will always worry, question, and wrestle with guilt.
10/31/2008 11:00:20 PM
another thing is, everybody is different. Just because drinking didn't hurt somebody doesn't mean it wouldn't hurt you. Personally, I wouldn't risk it with my own child. If I see my wife drinking while she's pregnant, you'll better believe she'll get some yelling her way.
