Has anyone had any luck or experience with this here in the Raleigh area? 10/31/2008 11:43:32 AM |

as far as uncapping goes?
you can do it, but time warner can (and will) see that you're doing it, and ban your account. they could also press charges.
it's a bad idea.
as far as the SIGMA firmware itself, it's fine - i have it on my SB5100 with TWC and i love it. i just like having all the added functionality and logging. yes, you CAN use it to modify the DOCSIS config file, but don't.] 10/31/2008 2:19:20 PM |

nah, you dont have an account nowadays... you can clone MAC ID's
I just ordered the new SB5100 with Sigma-X2 firmware on it... Hopefully many days of uncapped internets ahead!

here is my toast to you, may you rot in jail and or be sued to hell and back. Uncapping to get mroe than you pay for just makes it harder for the folks around you to get any part of what they pay for. And stealing hardwired net will get your cable connection pulled, and messing in the cable box will get you a visit form the sheriff. 10/31/2008 3:01:27 PM |

the MAC is tied to your account
DHCP will give you a DOCSIS config that redirects you in an endless loop to TWC's auth servers if the MAC is not on file
if you clone someone else's MAC, either the NAC will kick their modem offline or it will give you a DOCSIS config with network access disabled. eventually, twc will see that you're doing this, and will trace it back to your node.
you WILL get caught if you do it. there is no question about that. it doesn't matter if you have an account with them or not - remember, they own the cable line going to your house, they know what goes through it.
don't be a dumbass.]10/31/2008 3:12:46 PM |

not to try to piss anyone off here in the tww...
but I am trying to have a learning exercise here... this is something that I am trying to understand...
If you live in an apartment complex where there are mulitple complexes tapped from a singe HFC node, then they would have to go around to about 400+ jacks, over the entire complex to findout which one is uncapped, assuming the uncapped modem is stil live on the line... but heres another one for you to think about, what if you were to only run your uncapped modem for the time periods of lets say 6pm-9pm, or any other short period of time. the odds of them coming close to figuring out which house it is decreases dramatically.

I had a problem with Road Runner's download speed, so I upgraded to turbo for just 9.99 per month, they also have a 30 day trial about it.
It's much more legal than what you're proposing. 10/31/2008 3:28:34 PM |

i had no idea that everyone here was so anal about the legalities of everything... im sure there are a fair number of us that dabble in not so legal activities... 10/31/2008 3:33:06 PM |

yeah back when I had the damn powerboost level, it sucked balls
what I assume I am going to find out is that roadrunners network in my area is so over loaded that uncapped or not in the evening the usage will so high that even I want be about to pull more than the average user.
unless they have a QOS in the config too, but I want know until I get my username and password to the members site to start reading about the current settings in the configs. 10/31/2008 3:35:28 PM |

it's trivial to uncap, the tftpboot trick still works with the Surfboard modems... however, they can and will catch you
I fucked around with it for like an hour out of curiosity and restored my modem to the default settings without any communication from RoadRunner
then I later showed a friend how to do this and he left it running at 10/45 for around 48 hours before he lost service and they blacklisted his physical address... fortunately for him they rolled out DSL in his neighborhood a couple months later

I would just like higher upload speeds, theyre download speeds are okay.
But, how does the tftp trick still work? I thought the modems don't check on the LAN port anymore for a config file... 10/31/2008 9:56:33 PM |

THEIR UPLOAD SPEEDS SUCK SON AND I AGREE WE NEED A LITTLE MORE BANDWIDTH IN THAT DIRECTION. BUT AS FAR AS I CAN TELL, THEY ARE UPLOAD SPEEDS ARE OK. YOU'LL LEARN THE DIFFERENCE SOONER OR LATER, SON. 10/31/2008 9:58:33 PM |

i once back on the COX network did the "step" procedure that you could setup your on TFTP server and feed ta modified config to your modem, and then screw the coax in and boom your on the newwork at the highest HFC speeds allowed. considering back then in 2000/2001 there wasnt any business levels I think the highest was like 10mbps/1mbps that I could achieve.
but now-a-days you can get a new modem that isnt tied to any account and clone MAC's and other such so that you can surf anonymously, theres only one real thing that I would be concerned with is that instead of tracking you down physically they could use packet inspection and seach through packets to possibly gain personally identifible info. the only counter for this is to hook the modem up to a wireless AP with a higher gain antenna so that others may use it in the apartment complex also.
anyway, I think my package will be ariving soon, i will report if anything comes about this testing 11/1/2008 9:36:46 AM |
