I was walking to class and a NC State crew was painting over the Free Expression wall with white paint.

I took a look and it was a lot of anti-Obama crap, like "Thanks for fucking over the nation", "You elected a raghead", "antichrist" and "nigger" was in there too.

I disagree with saab about some things I've seen on the boards but he is right. Free expression is supposed to be completely free. I understand that getting some nasty stuff in the tunnel isn't great for the university, but censoring it will just upset the people who did it, and not necessarily help the situation. I would think that if it was left up then pro obama people would come paint over it anyway.

I'm not trying to come in as some sort of pro-censorship person, but has it occurred to anyone that maybe the university feels compelled to paint over things like this because they could be seen as creating a threatening climate for minority students who see these messages? Or that, with the wacky justice system, someone might be able to successfully sue the university if they did not paint over them?

Expecting truly free expression on a piece of university-owned property is a bit idealistic, plus that whole debate about whether hate speech is really free expression at all.
