This thread was made for a several reasons.

1) The undeniable awesomeness of this band's first 3 albums and the fact that they are worlds ahead of nearly any of the crap bands they get/got lumped together with (besides possibly tool). ("Adrenaline" was my first CD purchase ever...about 13 years ago and I still rock my "White Pony" hat several days a week)

2) They have a new record coming out in spring 2009. And, despite only enjoying select songs on their last 2 records, I am still looking forward to it because of who they are to me.

3) Chi Cheng (bass player) was in a car wreck last night that has him in a coma atm I hope he pulls through and I hope it wasnt due to drunk driving.

Share your love for the 'tones here!

deftones was definitely one of the best live concerts i've seen. it was in a small venue in greensboro too so that made it all the more better.

Signed. They get their own category in music as far as I'm concerned, and I try to see them whenever they're around. Their shows are great.

yea they really are very unique, especially the first few discs. The production on "White Pony" is some of the best production I have ever heard and certainly one of the best things Terry Date has produced.

and PS I love steph's guitar tone for their sound. Listening to their stuff is one of the only times I have ever felt the urge to get a 7 string.

i actually liked the newest album a lot. its a big departure from the early stuff, but good in a different way.

whats funny is that my wife mostly liked that new album as well, so i took her to see them and they only played stuff off the first 3 albums. she didn't really enjoy that.

i didn't listen to adrenaline until after white pony...around the fur was my first album with them, and still my favorite. i never listened to their 4th album, and i own saturday night wrists, but i only bought that album because the first time i heard 'beware' i freaked out, liking it so much. its probably the only good song on the album, unfortunately, i guess besides 'Rivière.'

deftones were important to me in retrospect because they were a major part of my progression in music tastes to something heavier. i can't thank them enough.

haha same. I was thinking "the deftones are back." The self titled/4th album is actually pretty good. Its certainly behind adrenaline, around the fur, and white pony for me but it has a lot of really good songs on it (ie its worth checking out). I liked a couple songs on this latest one like Cherry Waves and Kimdracula along with what you listed.

this thread is long overdue.

a buddy in middle school got me listening to them circa around the fur since i was obsessed with smashing pumpkins. then i played the crap outta white pony. that album is probably my favorite overall just because it was the first of their albums i bought. i think i've still got a white pony t-shirt i probably bought at hot topic or something...ha.

i liked the s/t a lot, but never really gave the snw a good chance. i should probably go back and give it another listen. anyone listened to the b-side/rarities collection that came out a few years ago? i listened to it, but nothing stuck.

I wanted to be Chino Moreno from about age 16 to about age 21.

True story. No band has been my favorite band for a longer period of time. I'm not into them like I used to be, but they were definitely my first love in music.

was waiting for you two to post heh.

B Sides and Rarities is not bad, I got it for the DVD with the videos. A lot of the songs I already had leaked, but the acoustic stuff is cool.

And yes, I wanted to be chino too.

probably true, but I didnt remember seeing a deftones thread in a long time. the order that I rank their first 3 albums changes all the time for me too. Ive really been feeling white pony lately although in the past I generally have said adrenaline was my fav.

bttt to say that their DJ, Frank Delgado, is super underrated too. Making him a full time member was probably the best decision they made during their career. He adds so much subtle background ambiance that people dont always notice in the forefront but its very key in the ethereal sound they have gone for over the years.
