"John Michael Crichton, M.D. pronounced /'kra?t?n/ [1], (October 23, 1942–November 5, 2008) is an American author, film producer, film director, medical doctor, and television producer best known for his science fiction and techno-thriller novels, films, and television programs. His books have sold over 150 million copies worldwide. His works are usually based on the action genre and heavily feature technology.

Many of his future history novels have medical or scientific underpinnings, reflecting his medical training and science background. He's the author of The Andromeda Strain, Congo, Disclosure, Timeline, State of Fear, Prey, and Next. He is also the creator of ER, but most famous for being the author of Jurassic Park, and its sequel The Lost World, both adapted into high grossing films and lead to the very successful franchise."

a friend at work said he went nutjob during his later years denying global warming and stuff

How about no, and don't tarnish this thread. His book on GW was pretty damn good (and fictional ppl). And there's nothing nutjob (quite the opposite) about disputing global warming.

RIP man

RIP. He was a very good author.

It's sad that people who view global warming with a critical eye are immediately branded nutjobs.

State of Fear was a good book. I also read Sphere which was a hell of a lot better book than that awful movie with Dustin Hoffman and Sharon Stone.

I recommend State of Fear to anyone since it is a good read loaded with real, referenced data disputing global warming.

RIP Michael Crichton.

i haven't read State of Fear but it appears that some of the footnotes and appendices used to back up the fictional work were heavily criticized by the scientific community

I'm in the midst of reading State of Fear because it's one of his only books I haven't read...I think....

There's a lot of scientific data which I don't know how much of it is actual data and how much of it is interpretation of actual data but regardless....Crichton is my favorite author of all time and one of the very few I could read. This sucks

Someone needs to preserve some of his blood in amber, so that we can clone him in later eras.

^^^ There is an epilogue in the book where he basically bashes much of the scientific community for their overhyping the global warming crisis IIRC. It's no surprise that he was criticized back.

He was by far my favorite author -- even his early works he published while in med school were amazing -- I strongly encourage anyone who likes his work to look up "John Lange" -- One of his books was recently republished, the others are extremely hard to come by, but well worth it if you can find them.

On a selfish note, I'm disappointed his book that was due to be released in December wont be making it out :-/ Its been postponed indefinitely

I read: The Andromeda Strain, Congo, Disclosure, Sphere, Jurassic Park, Rising Sun, The Lost World,Airframe, Prey and State of Fear

I dunno which would be my favorite, I did like State of Fear b/c of the environmental politics class I took and liked the footnotes on actual data.

I will miss his writings that could have been.
