Indeed a sad day.
Quote : | "Former San Diego Chargers quarterback Ryan Leaf has been placed on indefinite leave from West Texas A&M, where he had been quarterbacks coach, ESPN.com reports.
Athletic director Michael McBroom confirmed the leave, and a source told the website that Leaf admitted asking a player for a pill to help him deal with wrist pain that lingers from his playing days. McBroom would not comment on that allegation, saying an investigation had not been completed.
Leaf was in his third season with West Texas A&M and served as the men's golf coach, too." |

Wow, 1/3 of the Black Coaches in NCAA football have lost their jobs before Bowl season.
Ok it's only two but I'm sure the BCA will make it seem like a relevant statistic. 11/5/2008 3:57:37 PM |

I'm kinda wondering why this came down anyways.... He was 4-5 but he had a ton of JuCo players. I just read an article about him a couple weeks back - he was left with shit so he hit up the JuCo's and a lot of them are starting. Not much he could do about that....
Just looked, 19 of his 32 recruits in 2008 were JuCo players

^ I recently just moved from Kansas and I fully expected Prince to be fired this season. Prince could never get any good high school recruits to commit to KSU (except Josh Freeman) and so he bet the farm on JuCo players this season hoping for a bowl bid. Many of the top JuCo players come from schools right there in the Midwest so it was easy for him to land a bunch of them.
What Bill Snyder accomplished at K-State has got to be considered one of greatest college coaching accomplishments in football history. Prince and whoever they hire as a replacement has no chance unless they have Jim Grobe like abilities or they throw a bunch of cash at recruits ala Bob Huggins/Michael Beasley & Bill Walker. 11/5/2008 4:40:17 PM |

Yeah, Manhattan, KS can't be the easiest place to recruit... Weird though, Snyder used to recruit the JuCo's heavy too. He built that team from scratch and they were ranked #1 at one point

I don't know how to describe it..... To compare it to NC, I'd say it's like Winston-Salem without all the glimmer. However, unlike WS, you can't drive 3 hours and be at the beach or in the mountains. You drive 3 hours in any direction and you see basically the same shit. The closest big city is an hour away (Topeka) and it's like 2 or 3 hours from KC. 11/5/2008 5:25:18 PM |

^ pretty much right on. Manhattan, KS calls itself the Little Apple and has an area with college bars, etc, but it does not compare to better college towns like Athens, Gainesville, even Chapel Hill.
Snyder used a blend of JuCo players and under the radar high school kids to build his program. Ultimately Snyder was simply a great coach in terms of developing his players and game strategy. 11/5/2008 5:49:01 PM |

How is it like Winston-Salem? The only thing close by is a military base. Topeka is disappointing, and Lawrence and KC are 2 hours away. Denver is 6 hours or so. 11/5/2008 6:49:22 PM |

Ron Prince was a JUCO player. He probably doesn't see JUCO players in the same way that other coaches might.

I'm surprised about Croom and a little disappointed. I don't know how much real pressure he was under but Croom seems like the type of coach that would step down if he thought it was the best thing. He seemed to have a lot of character and integrity. His biggest problem was not being able to correct the complete ineptitude on offense.

The word on the proverbial street here at Miss. State is that the alumni base and donors wanted Croom's Offensive Coordinator, Woody McCorvey gone. They had it up to here with 5 straight seasons of being 100+ in offensive in the NCAA.
However Croom apparently was loyal to his staff until the bitter end.
So now I do not know where Miss State is going to get their next coach from. We thought recruiting after Amato left was difficult, being here at State is just as hard now with Nutt over at Ole Miss, Alabama resurgent, and being in the same division as LSU and Tennessee is ridiculous.
However I think Bowden would be a good fit. The last thing MSU needs though is a undisciplined new coach that washes away the hard work Croom put it getting us back from the brink after our NCAA probationary period. So no to Chuck the Chest.
Also Croom was not fired because we have no money to buy out his contract which we just renewed last year. 11/29/2008 5:42:41 PM |

He started out well with a 7-4 record in 2005. Akron had the tie breaker and got into the MAC Championship game over the RedHawks. They went a disappointing 2-10 (2-6) in 2006. Then made it to the MAC Championship game last year with a 5-2 conference record, but lost to Central Michigan to finish 6-7. They beat Syracuse that year as well and went into double overtime with Minnesota.
2 good years and 2 bad years. It sucks for Shane. He'll bounce back though. 11/30/2008 12:32:53 AM |

Quote : | "Tennessee reportedly has agreed to terms with Lane Kiffin to become its head coach. Kelly, 47, was in the running early but last week said he told his lawyers to keep calls away from him. He could earn in excess of $1.5 million this year at Cincinnati, including incentives, and leaving a successful construction project in the winnable Big East Conference for a rebuilding effort in the Southeastern Conference's uncertain pressure pit apparently wasn't right for someone.
That only stoked the hot rumor surrounding college football's hottest coach, that Kelly actually wants to coach at Notre Dame -- assuming no one in South Bend has discovered that, back in the day, he used to call Boston College his dream job." |
