= Fail?
bought a thumbdrive off newegg last week, they shipped it DHL smartmail. here's the tracking info:
11/10/2008 9:31 AM ET FOREST PARK, GA, US TENDERED TO USPS 11/10/2008 6:23 AM ET FOREST PARK, GA, US ARRIVAL DESTINATION DHL GLOBAL MAIL FACILITY 11/8/2008 8:19 AM ET HEBRON, KY, US DEPARTURE ORIGIN DHL GLOBAL MAIL FACILITY 11/7/2008 2:03 PM ET HEBRON, KY, US PROCESSED 11/7/2008 12:38 PM ET HEBRON, KY, US ARRIVAL ORIGIN DHL GLOBAL MAIL FACILITY 11/6/2008 4:00 PM CT MEMPHIS, TN, US PICK UP
so TN -> KY -> GA on its way to NC?
Around the 10th I heard that DHL would be shuttering its domestic US service. Did they mean that day, and that's why it went to USPS? 11/12/2008 10:35:36 AM |

According to CNN they aren't shutting completely down until Jan 30. But they've been in talks with UPS about selling off the domestic part of their shipping anyway apparently, so even if UPS were to buy out that aspect it would still go through. 11/12/2008 11:14:30 AM |

dude, did you buy the 16gb OCZ diesel drive for $16 AR, too?
i've been waiting for this joker for a week now...WTF, newegg? this wasn't even a free shipping offer! they could have thrown a damn stamp on an envelope and it would have been here in no more than 4 days

i ordered something through newegg a week or two ago. it shipped DHL and took a week to get here but i was really hoping that it would ship UPS ground because it would have been here by the weekend, which is when i really needed it.
i don't see how DHL ever expected to succeed while competing with FedEx and UPS. they didn't have any improved business model or shipping method, it was just more competition. 11/12/2008 11:28:18 AM |

no, I got the 8gb drive for $8 after rebate with free shipping. but yeah. apparently the rebate requires that you postmark it within 16 days of the date on the purchase receipt. So I got till Sunday.
I don't see why Newegg puts up with it, the main reason I'm loyal to them is that the 5 or 6 orders I've made from them over the last few years got to me surprisingly fast.

smartpost uses DHL to get the item to your local USPS distribution center, and it's up to the USPS to deliver it from there
i'm not sure why it got turned over to the USPS in georgia, though... that's strange. 11/12/2008 12:53:40 PM |

they used to be awesome...their free shipping items would arrive, in the vast majority of cases, within 2 days of me placing the order (if i did it before noon-1pm)

i've always had good luck with dhl. i was sad when i saw they were closing . their price on shipping things were constantly 15-25% cheaper than fedex/ups and nobody i shipped to complained ab shipping time. 11/12/2008 1:54:22 PM |

i don't mind DHL if it's ONLY DHL i'm dealing with...this smartpost is like asking for your item to take longer than if you'd just gone with any of the other three (UPS, FedEX, or *shudder* USPS) in the first place
if you follow the DHL smartpost link in the email newegg sent you, you can track your package from DHL...once it's given off to USPS, there's a link at the bottom of the DHL page that sends you to the USPS tracking page (which is, by far, the most useless piece of shit ever created)
my package was (supposedly) accepted in raleigh at 9:40am on MONDAY...you would think it would have been delivered YESTERDAY, at the very latest...i'll be surprised if it's in my mailbox when i get home today 11/12/2008 2:01:03 PM |

^thats true about the useless website. I've had it supposedly in Raleigh for like two days before it showed up at my house one time. Then the next order it was supposedly in another state but showed up at my door that day and when I checked back in too see how it had gotten here so quickly there were suddenly 3 or 4 scan hits that hadn't updated for like a day and a half. USPS is just crap. 11/12/2008 2:23:04 PM |

yeah, buy.com shipped an SD card of mine via smartmail. If I had actually needed the card right then, I would have been more than slightly agitated.

DHL isn't really the problem...their smartpost/smartmail/bullshit service with the USPS is the problem...i don't think most people realize that it's the USPS that's slowing everything down
so help me, it better be here today or i'm calling up newegg to get my shipping fee refunded...this is so fucking ridiculous 11/13/2008 1:58:40 PM |

i have always had good experiences with dhl
it's the USPS i have had problems with
smartpost = dhl transports your package to a nearby usps shipping hub in a very reasonable amount of time + the usps leaves it sitting there for a week or two and then finally decides to deliver it a while later while making the packaging look as beat up as humanly possible11/14/2008 1:00:22 AM |

USPS is a bunch of fucksticks
STILL not there yesterday...i checked this morning and the USPS tracking system says "arrived at unit" in 27606 at 6:53am today...the hell? does this mean it's supposedly there? because 1.) my mail doesn't come that early, and 2.) 27606 isn't my zip code
i'm assuming that means it arrived at my "local" post office...so help me, it had better be in my mailbox when i get home...i checked online and they call this the "egg saver" shipping (i remember when egg saver was no more than 4 days from california, and this is from tennessee!), which is supposedly 3-7 days...if it's not here today, that's the end of day 7 since shipping, and i'm calling up newegg for a refund on my shipping fees 11/14/2008 9:29:23 AM |

also when i've gotten stuff shipped from frys.com they use DHL and it's great, it's the aforementioned handoff to USPS that's the problem.

*used to work in logistics*
DHL is really worthless.
FedEx is behind them in the list, especially locally.
DHL -> attempts to ship to only large metros on their own planes / trucks, once things get more rural they use FedEx or UPS, smartpost packages go USPS
FedEx -> Facility in Durham is currently running somewhere around 150% of capacity, almost every package I shipped was severely damaged if it weighed over 15 lbs. FedEx drivers are individual contractors that rent the truck, have little to no responsibility for their route (watched FedEx drivers throw our packages to the rear of the truck and slam the back wall)
UPS -> everything stays UPS, no other carriers used, only USPS has more trucks in their fleet, drivers are UPS employees.
Sometimes UPS might cost more, but I've found that it is worth that $2 hands down to go with a reputable carrier and not have to file insurance claims. 11/19/2008 3:43:34 PM |
