So I've tried one hospital in my hometown...pretty much they can't give you an internship position unless it is required for graduation...do wakemed or rex do anything like this? Ive explored wakemed's site and found some info...but just wondering if anyone had any experience in this?

Have you tried contacting anyone at Rex or WakeMed? I bet that would be a good place to start.
